A Perú llegará a las 12.00 y en ese mismo momento entregará regalos a diestra y siniestra... Bueno, nunca está demás fantasear con la idea, pero en todo caso aquí está la ubicación de Papa Noel si estás interesado en cómo hace su chamba anualmente.

Siendo diciembre un mes bastante emotivo, no podría evitar recordar a un amigo que yace flotando entre las más lejanas estrellas; en los altos extramuros del infinito; en un imaginario y real Monte Olimpo; observando como los mortales, aquellos que permanecemos, emprendemos lucha y esperando el golpe final.

Creo firmemente que la verdadera amistad se forja en la en la madrugada de la vida, y dura hasta la media noche de ésta. Sólo que hay medianoches anticipadas, que nos editan y nos devuelven a donde estuvimos antes de tener nombre y apellido.

Siempre he de recordar al amigo y al hermano, aunque tu rastro, tu tristeza, tu peso y tu zapato no este más entre nos.

Recuerdos de un desamor

La luz roja de la sirena ondulante de un patrullero se colaba por la ventana del viejo bus donde Alberto viajaba. Aun cuando pensaba en Alexandra, no podía dejar de imaginar las historias que se tejerían tras esa patrulla: “¿Quiénes serán esos policías? ¿A quiénes estarán persiguiendo? ¿Qué enredo estarán tratando de resolver?” La mente de Alberto no podía dejar de hilar historias e hilvanar conjeturas sobre casi cualquier tema que asomaba sus estímulos. Pero, siempre estaba Alexandra quien aparecía permanentemente, como los fantasmas de MacBeth en Shakespeare de marzo.

Alexandra, era la clara luna imaginada en Andalucía mora, asomando su pícaro resplandor por las labradas ventanas de un palacio musulmán. Alberto la conoció un fin de semana en un congreso de periodistas hace meses atrás. Como dicen los huachafos de la retórica, la química fue perfecta, natural e inmediata.

Alexandra y Alberto no dudaron un minuto en salir los dos días en los que duró el congreso. El mar que los refrescó, la brisa que los acarició y el Sol que los abrazó coincidieron en que ambos se conocían en lo previo de una o más vidas.

Y Alberto la recordó más y más, y aquellos recuerdos se fundían y se confundían con las espectrales figuras que dibujaba el paisaje nocturno durante su viaje. Cada casita en el camino, cada luz en la lejanía eran la promesa del próximo recuerdo que Alexandra continuaba plasmando en la ya atribulada mente de Alberto.

Alberto, la amó. La amó aunque este le era un verbo prohibido. Porque no lo usaba ni con su propia novia, cuya relación, pensaba él, estaba muerta en vida. Y sí, él amó a Alexandrá, y además fue consciente que él amor también la encontró a ella.

El bus paraba de tanto en tanto, ningún rastro de ciudad se asomaba más. La noche reinaba absoluta y soberbia sobre el desierto, no más luces en el horizonte; sólo bultos correlones por la ventana, y un asiento vacío a la derecha.

“No hay más química” pensó Alberto. Mucho tiempo había pasado desde aquella experiencia con Alexandra, pero Alberto mantenía su recuerdo vivo artificialmente, jugaba con él, lo acariciaba y lo engreía. Pero él conocía el juego, sabía de lo efímero del sentimiento, de lo clandestino que fue aquella experiencia, y de la ninguna posibilidad de repetirla.

La noticia del casamiento de Alexandra fue solo la confirmación de que el amor eterno es absolutamente efímero. Sin embargo, aún mantenía la esperanza de que éste se reencarne en otro nombre y en otro rostro.

El bus llegó al final de su cansina ruta. Alberto no la recordó más. Olvido el sunset en la playa, su risa de antes y después, y su mirada de ahora y siempre. Recordó solamente que, el único compromiso válido entre ellos fue no tenerlo. Y sólo recordó eso, y nada más… y los recuerdos se bañaron en realidad, cuando los labios de Adriana estrecharon los de Alberto. “Me extrañaste mi amor” susurró Adriana. “Mucho mi amor”, mintió Alberto.

La Embustera de Egipto y el caso de los embalsamamientos urbanos I

En el documento, impreso en la última hoja A4 que le quedaba a la comisaría de Chorrillos se podía leer: “A las dieciséis horas del 29 de octubre de 2011, efectivos de la comisaría de Huaylas en el Distrito de Chorrillos encontraron el cuerpo, en aparente estado de momificación de Sandra Daniela Chávez Álvarez, sin evidencias de daños, contusiones, ni laceraciones; más allá de aparentes costuras en el cuerpo de la víctima. El cuerpo no despedía ningún tipo de olor fétido, estando con la occisa todas sus pertenencias y objetos de valor”.

La noticia llegó a las redacciones periodísticas como reguero de pólvora, y la pregunta siempre era la misma, ¿Cómo es que alguien que había desaparecido sólo unos días atrás pudo haber sido encontrada en estado de momificación absoluta?

A las ocho de la noche del mismo día del hallazgo, los primeros reportes empezaban a aparecer en los medios de comunicación televisivos de Lima.

ESTUDIANTE DE MEDICINA ES HALLADA EN ESTADO DE MOMIFICACIÓN, SIN SIGNOS DE VIOLENCIA FÍSICA.

A las 10 de la noche del mismo día, se filtraría la información de se habría extraído la masa encefálica y los intestinos de Sandra Daniela, en una suerte de ritual momificación.

La noticia estalló con mayor fuerza en todos los medios de comunicación, y las especulaciones empezaron a retumbar en todas las esferas de una sociedad, ya bastante acostumbrada a historias de asesinatos. Sin embargo este, tenía una especial y macabra diferencia.

A las once de la noche del mismo día, entra una llamada al set del programa televisivo Noticia Dominical. El profesor Roberto Olaechea del departamento de antropología de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, dijo en cadena nacional que ese procedimiento de momificación era idéntico al practicado hace más de cinco mil años en el antiguo Egipto; y que no había escuchado nada nunca igual en la historia moderna.

A través de la ventana del avión de KLM se puede ver el ala agitándose, como si en algún momento se fuera a desprender de él. El sonido de las turbinas del motor era el perfecto acompañamiento para alguien a quien sólo le interesaba dialogar con su soledad.

Frente a ella, una pantalla marcaba el punto exacto sobre el cual la nave sobrevolaba. “El Atlantico es amplio, pero llegaré a tiempo” pensó Alexandra, mientras bebía una copa de vino, que la azafata vestida de impecable azul, le invitó.

No era la primera vez que Alexandra hacía esta ruta, al contrario, es probablemente la décima vez que lo hacía, no lo tenía tan claro.

Lo que si tenía claro, era la extraordinaria necesidad de descanso que tenía, luego de los incontables viajes que tuvo por el interior de Perú durante el último mes. Viajes que la llevaron al Cusco, Arequipa y Nazca.

Alexandra llevaba en su pasaporte muchos sellos que hablaban de viajes a recónditos lugares. China, Egipto, Kenia, México, Yemen, Japón; además de toda la zona europea. Eso alteraba un poco la noción que tenia de las escalas horarias; pero le permitió alcanzar un alto estándar en dominio de lenguas, que le permitían moverse con suma facilidad en entornos culturalmente extraños y exóticos.

Precisamente esa era su fortaleza, desde que era estudiante de Antropología de la Universidad Central de Venezuela en Caracas. Su padre, un humilde profesor de colegio de pueblo, inculco en ella un amor compulsivo por la lectura desde pequeña.

Alexandra lo tenía muy presente, y era un recuerdo inevitable en su diario devenir. Sin embargo recuerdos amargos asaltaban su mente de tiempo en tiempo. Recuerdos que le hicieron aplicar a esa beca en Arqueología en la Universidad de Zurich, y dejar atrás los cinco años de relación con Juan Pablo.

Mientras pensaba en pedir otra pequeña botella de vino, Alexandra pensó en lo primero que haría al llegar a su apartamento en Altstetten. En su novísima cátedra de Arqueología Peruana, y en su viaje a Jordania con Paul, su nuevo y desabrido novio británico.

La Embustera de Egipto y su visita a Lima

Cuando la madrugada del lunes pasado recibí la llamada de mi mejor amiga, cuyo nombre no mencionaré, me encontraba en un profundo sueño; que me llevaba a recónditos y subyugantes parajes, lejos, muy lejos de mi actual y solitaria ubicación.

La llamada, en tono expectante y emocionado, era para alertarme de la inminente llegada de la inolvidable y hermosa Alexandra, amiga de mucho tiempo, y a quien conocí casualmente durante un vuelo a Amsterdam muchos años atrás.

Alexandra tenía, y tiene, la particularidad de hacer que olvide muchas de mis noches más amargas y despobladas; y desde que nos conocimos, hemos desarrollado una fecunda amistad; llena de retos intelectuales y momentos realmente edificantes.

No puedo ocultar la alegría que me causa volver a saber de ella. Lo único que conocía era que andaba viajando a exóticos lugares al rededor de mundo. Dejó Caracas para iniciar estudios en la Universidad de Zurich, la misma que también en visité en 2006, y donde nos volvimos a encontrar para tomarnos un café en el Odeon y conversar sobre su nueva maestría, y algo sobre mi vida amorosa, tan venida a menos por aquellos días.

Regresando a la llamada, la voz de aquella chica que no nombraré, me comentó que el vuelo de Alexandra debía llegar en poco tiempo, así como poco tiempo sería su estancia en Lima.

Alexandra, tenía un rarísimo don de la ubicuidad. Una capacidad innata de estar en diferentes lugares, gracias a su trabajo de antropóloga y su afición para hablar lenguas e idiomas extranjeros. Sin embargo, guarda para sí una serie de misterios que aún no he logrado descifrar. Aún cuando le he preguntado directamente sobre sus constantes viajes a Ica y Cuzco, sus vueltas a Egipto, y sus súbitos y cortísimos regresos al Perú.

Nunca obtuve una respuesta coherente, más bien, me cambiaba de tema, y nos encontrábamos conversando sobre su frustrada boda, y lo caro que costaba el alquiler su departamento en Altstetten.

Lo cierto es que últimamente he venido sospechando sobre la razón de sus visitas, el por qué de sus apariciones, y la razón de sus cortísimas estancias en Lima. Más todavía, la extraña coincidencia entre sus entradas al país, y la cadena de asesinatos selectivos desatada en la ciudad.

De hecho he puesto en tela de juicio muchas de las cosas que me ha contado. He descubierto incoherencias en sus explicaciones, y extrañas proclividades por antiguos ritos de embalsamamiento que coinciden con lo aparecido en los medios últimamente. Igual, estoy resuelto a volver a verla, y a besarla, como lo hicimos hace unos meses.

Muerte por un desamor

Alberto clavó el filudo cuchillo hasta sentir el característico sonido del reprimido brote líquido en erupción que le hacía recordar aquella película de Alfred Hitchcock que vio por primera vez a los nueve años. Aquel rojizo fluído le trajo a la memoria aquella escena del baño; sin embargo no le dio mayor importancia. Cogió el trozo de zandía recién cortado y se dirigió a la sala. Los techos amplios de la casa, hacían que cada movimiento musitara un sonido espectral, al que ya se había acostumbrado con los años.

Fueron trece en total, conviviendo con la penosa y a veces autocomplaciente soledad, rodeado de la medianía gris de sus dolorosos pensamientos siempre en satánico conflicto con sus lacerantes dudas morales. Repentinamente pensó en Diana. Recordó Alberto las frías y húmedas mañanas limeñas de agosto de hace cuarenta años. Tantos años – pensó atribulado.

Caminó cansino hacia el sillón de madera tallada en cedro, sentose frente a la ventana grande, miró emocionado el espectáculo silencioso de la luna llena; y en su nívea imagen creyó verla en inmaculada danza celestial. Allí estaba, literalmente en el cielo. ¿Cómo olvidarla? Cómo olvidar esperarla a diario tan solo para contemplarla a lo lejos, refugiado en la envolvente timidez que lo paralizaba.

Alberto, interrumpió sus recuerdos para llevarse a la boca un trozo de zandía, y continuó con su monólogo interior recreando la ficticia imagen en donde finalmente se arma de esquivo coraje y se enfrenta a Diana. Pero es tarde ya.

La noticia de su muerte fue demasiado para él. Lo sobrecogió en demasía saber de su partida dejando solamente una estela de pesadumbre y dolor.

Alberto la dejó de ver en la universidad, no la vio envejecer ni perder su belleza, quedando en su memoria intacta y vívida.

Esa noche, bajo el rubor de la Luna, Albero cogió el cuchillo ya enrojecido por el jugo de aquella fruta, y palpó la madera tosca su mango, deslizando uno de sus dedos por el frío filo metálico. Al tiempo que una idea daba vueltas en su atribulada mente.

Sí, ¿por qué no? - se preguntó extasiado. La solución final sería esa. Volverla a ver y estar cerca de su ser sin los temores de antes, y con la resolución que nunca tuvo. Sólo sería un pequeño trance hasta alcanzarla en ese imaginario patio repleto de nuncas; en ese colosal mediterráneo donde ella ahora navega esplendorosa y majestuosa.

Alberto acercó la punta del filudo objeto hacia su corazón, sintió de él sus palpitaciones, su respiración se aceleró - es sólo un apretón - pensó. Presionó fuerte con las dos manos su boleto hacia Diana, pero una lágrima brotó de sus ojos. Soltó el cuchillo y lloró.

¡Soy un cobarde! - se reprochó, mientras lloraba como una criatura. Alberto no tenía valor de hacerlo. Ni siquiera el amor por Diana le servía para llegar a ella. Ella que sí lo tuvo para llegar a él. A ese que no era Alberto, y del que Diana vivió enamorada hasta la enajenación, y por quien se mató con una daga en el corazón.

Las 10 Estrategias de Manipulación Mediática de Noam Chomski

Noam Chomski definió las 10 estrategias de manipulación mediática más utilizadas en el mundo, y en especial en países en desarrollo. Algunos de los puntos mencionados son ampliamente reconocibles en el Perú como práctica habitual. Aún cuando parece un poco conspiranoico, muchos de los elementos y variables explicados por Chomski son realmente practicados y evidentes.

1. La estrategia de la distracción El elemento primordial del control social es la estrategia de la distracción que consiste en desviar la atención del público de los problemas importantes y de los cambios decididos por las elites políticas y económicas, mediante la técnica del diluvio o inundación de continuas distracciones y de informaciones insignificantes. La estrategia de la distracción es igualmente indispensable para impedir al público interesarse por los conocimientos esenciales, en el área de la ciencia, la economía, la psicología, la neurobiología y la cibernética. ”Mantener la Atención del público distraída, lejos de los verdaderos problemas sociales, cautivada por temas sin importancia real. Mantener al público ocupado, ocupado, ocupado, sin ningún tiempo para pensar; de vuelta a granja como los otros animales (cita del texto ‘Armas silenciosas para guerras tranquilas)”.

2. Crear problemas y después ofrecer soluciones. Este método también es llamado “problema-reacción-solución”. Se crea un problema, una “situación” prevista para causar cierta reacción en el público, a fin de que éste sea el mandante de las medidas que se desea hacer aceptar. Por ejemplo: dejar que se desenvuelva o se intensifique la violencia urbana, u organizar atentados sangrientos, a fin de que el público sea el demandante de leyes de seguridad y políticas en perjuicio de la libertad. O también: crear una crisis económica para hacer aceptar como un mal necesario el retroceso de los derechos sociales y el desmantelamiento de los servicios públicos.

3. La estrategia de la gradualidad. Para hacer que se acepte una medida inaceptable, basta aplicarla gradualmente, a cuentagotas, por años consecutivos. Es de esa manera que condiciones socioeconómicas radicalmente nuevas (neoliberalismo) fueron impuestas durante las décadas de 1980 y 1990: Estado mínimo, privatizaciones, precariedad, flexibilidad, desempleo en masa, salarios que ya no aseguran ingresos decentes, tantos cambios que hubieran provocado una revolución si hubiesen sido aplicadas de una sola vez.

4. La estrategia de diferir. Otra manera de hacer aceptar una decisión impopular es la de presentarla como “dolorosa y necesaria”, obteniendo la aceptación pública, en el momento, para una aplicación futura. Es más fácil aceptar un sacrificio futuro que un sacrificio inmediato. Primero, porque el esfuerzo no es empleado inmediatamente. Luego, porque el público, la masa, tiene siempre la tendencia a esperar ingenuamente que “todo irá mejorar mañana” y que el sacrificio exigido podrá ser evitado. Esto da más tiempo al público para acostumbrarse a la idea del cambio y de aceptarla con resignación cuando llegue el momento.

5. Dirigirse al público como criaturas de poca edad. La mayoría de la publicidad dirigida al gran público utiliza discurso, argumentos, personajes y entonación particularmente infantiles, muchas veces próximos a la debilidad, como si el espectador fuese una criatura de poca edad o un deficiente mental. Cuanto más se intente buscar engañar al espectador, más se tiende a adoptar un tono infantilizante. Por qué? “Si uno se dirige a una persona como si ella tuviese la edad de 12 años o menos, entonces, en razón de la sugestionabilidad, ella tenderá, con cierta probabilidad, a una respuesta o reacción también desprovista de un sentido crítico como la de una persona de 12 años o menos de edad (ver “Armas silenciosas para guerras tranquilas”)”.

6. Utilizar el aspecto emocional mucho más que la reflexión. Hacer uso del aspecto emocional es una técnica clásica para causar un corto circuito en el análisis racional, y finalmente al sentido critico de los individuos. Por otra parte, la utilización del registro emocional permite abrir la puerta de acceso al inconsciente para implantar o injertar ideas, deseos, miedos y temores, compulsiones, o inducir comportamientos…

7. Mantener al público en la ignorancia y la mediocridad. Hacer que el público sea incapaz de comprender las tecnologías y los métodos utilizados para su control y su esclavitud. “La calidad de la educación dada a las clases sociales inferiores debe ser la más pobre y mediocre posible, de forma que la distancia de la ignorancia que planea entre las clases inferiores y las clases sociales superiores sea y permanezca imposibles de alcanzar para las clases inferiores (ver ‘Armas silenciosas para guerras tranquilas)”.

8. Estimular al público a ser complaciente con la mediocridad. Promover al público a creer que es moda el hecho de ser estúpido, vulgar e inculto…

9. Reforzar la autoculpabilidad. Hacer creer al individuo que es solamente él el culpable por su propia desgracia, por causa de la insuficiencia de su inteligencia, de sus capacidades, o de sus esfuerzos. Así, en lugar de rebelarse contra el sistema económico, el individuo se autodesvalida y se culpa, lo que genera un estado depresivo, uno de cuyos efectos es la inhibición de su acción. Y, sin acción, no hay revolución!

10. Conocer a los individuos mejor de lo que ellos mismos se conocen. En el transcurso de los últimos 50 años, los avances acelerados de la ciencia han generado una creciente brecha entre los conocimientos del público y aquellos poseídas y utilizados por las elites dominantes. Gracias a la biología, la neurobiología y la psicología aplicada, el “sistema” ha disfrutado de un conocimiento avanzado del ser humano, tanto de forma física como psicológicamente. El sistema ha conseguido conocer mejor al individuo común de lo que él se conoce a sí mismo. Esto significa que, en la mayoría de los casos, el sistema ejerce un control mayor y un gran poder sobre los individuos, mayor que el de los individuos sobre sí mismos.

Charles Chaplin nació un 16 de abril en 1889, por lo que cumpliría 122 años, y una de las mejores formas de recordarlo es a través de su trabajo. Tiempo Modernos es una de sus películas más icónicas, que nos muestra un mundo cada vez más industrializado y deshumanizado en el medio de la Gran Depresión norteamericana. Esta película, muda y en blanco y negro, es una crítica a las condiciones laborales de la época; que se practican incluso hoy en día en muchos países del mundo.

Tiempos Modernos tiene una gran significación social, aún cuando el mismo Chaplin le ha restado esa importancia. La película tiene algunos efectos sonoros, y se considera el paso inmediatamente previo al cine sonoro. Les dejo la película ya completamente colgada en YouTube.

Ya no la amo... nunca la ame, fue un lejano fantasma, un espejismo que yo inventé... y sin embargo te dilatas ante mi, superlativa tu... pretendes colonizarme infructuosamente, aun cuando mis quereres han zarpado ya de tu puerto.

No me ames, pienso, no me envuelvas en mi propia culpa. Esquivo tu cariño, me escapo de tus caricias, tus palabras me laceran y el día es plomo.

Cruzamos la calle, las miradas fugaces, las prisas extrañas, las gentes... tu y yo, pero yo con mis pensamientos... mis pensamientos con ella, con ella que no eres tú; que tú no eres ella.

Luego de los resultados de las últimas elecciones, en las que los candidatos Ollanta Humala y Keiko Fujimori obtuvieron la mayor cantidad de votos, y que los conduce a disputarse la segunda vuelta; las reacciones entre muchos jóvenes de la clase media y alta limeña (y de otras grandes ciudades) ha hecho recordar lo peor del neofascismo más intolerante.

Particularmente no creo que estemos frente a un fenómeno nuevo, peinso que siempre tuvimos un racismo soterrado desde épocas pre hispanas. La teocracia inca basó su poder en la opresión de pueblos como los Chancas y los Chachapoyas. Posteriormente los Españoles hicieron lo suyo hasta la República Aristocrática.

Somos un país estratificado en clases sociales muy diferenciadas las mismas que coinciden con características raciales, siendo una minoría predominantemente blanca y de procedencia europea la que conduce los intereses del país. Por otro lado la gran mayoría de ciudadanos que vive en extrema pobreza son en su mayoría descendientes de la población indígena y negra.

Todos estos elementos configuran una realidad muy clara, en el Perú la pobreza está íntimamente ligada con la postergación étnica, económica y social; y se reproduce día a día.

Sin embargo han sido en estás elecciones, donde más evidentes se han hecho los prejuicios entre los diferentes sectores sociales, sobre todo de parte de muchos de los seguidores de Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, quienes simplemente no podían concebir que su candidato no haya pasado a la segunda vuelta electoral.

El origen del racismo

Durante la colonia sucedió algo similar a una violación, dado que los españoles sólo estaban interesados en el oro inca; saquearon, robaron y violaron; eventualmente cristianizaron. Esta situación provocó una suerte de trauma en donde el colonizador es el violador, y los indígenas la parte violada; de tal forma que toda forma de opresión se validó en el marco de la hegemonía europea.

Esta situación se arrastró en el tiempo, se grabó en el inconsciente colectivo de la sociedad, y la emancipación reafirmó esta situación, en donde el blanco era superior y el indio inferior. Por eso hasta nuestros días la población india se siente menos, y trata al blanco con superioridad avergonzándose de su condición.

Con la aparición de los medios de comunicación masiva, estos hechos se reafirmaron a través de las peliculas de vaqueros por ejemplo, donde los blancos eran los buenos mientras los indios eran los malos. Aún cuando los indios lo único que hacían era defender su territorio.

Son trescientos años de colonización española, y casi doscientos de república, que día a día han reafirmado esta brecha, aún cuando en los últimos años ha habido una suerte de aceptación aún tenue, este proceso electoral, no hace sino hacer evidente el soterrado racismo que hay en el Perú.

Ya durante la época del terrorismo las noticias de muertes y asesinatos de comuneros, eran vistas con lejanía desde Lima, los muertos indígenas no eran asumidos como propios, y los medios de comunicación les dedicaban poco espacio.

Todos estos hechos configuran una sociedad fragmentada entre los habitantes de la costa criolla, moderna e industrializada, y el resto del país en su mayoría con altísimos niveles de pobreza.

Los comentarios racistas de todo tipo en estos días, aparecidos en las redes sociales son un indicador de que todo lo mencionado subsiste de forma lamentable entre miembros de una clase social con un supuesto mejor nivel educativo . Más todavía, estos episodios de intolerancia nada democráticos son similares a los ocurridos en Bolivia, y que desataron una escalada de violencia en Santa Cruz.

Es probable que estos hechos queden aquí como una anécdota más de las elecciones, y regresemos al status quo. Pero también es posible que aparezca algún caudillo que canalice este racismo y le de forma, tal como la película alemana La Ola, en donde un profesor, a través de un experimento, reproduce una situación de totalitaria a través de una pregunta: ¿Es posible que Alemania vuelva a tener un gobierno dictatorial en pleno siglo XXI?

¿Se puede ser un aspirante a la felicidad siendo más bien un asistente aplicado de la tragedia? ¿Se puede engañar y embaucar constantemente a la verdad, para ser un torpe y voluntario invento pérfido y sin gracia?

Sí se puede, y lo compruebo día a día, lo veo aquí y allá. Pero sí tuviera que encarnar aquello que veo cada mañana en sólo una persona, esa desgraciada alma sería la de Flora Carbalho.

Flora es toda ella un misterioso acertijo, una subrepticia adivinanza tapizada barrocamente de superficiales lecturas, poses estudiadas y una lascivia sin prohibiciones morales. Ni siquiera ella misma sabría decir de qué puerto provienen sus navíos, ni qué bandera flameaba en su azotado existir.

Ella, su nombre, sus emociones y su vida fueron quince primeros años de falsedades consuetudinarias; ambivalencias que llegaron a su fin con un viaje y una revelación.

Fueron pues, las playas de Santa Guadalupe del Embarcadero, escenario teatral de sus primeros arrebatos adolescentes: furtivos marinos, hijos de familias notables (y no tan notables), deportistas y pequeños escritores quienes incendiaron por primera vez las praderas inmaculadas de su morena piel.

Curiosa e intuitiva, supo ser buena amante de sus amamantes. Fue una brillante amante. Fue mi amante. Y sí que lo fue. Y aún lo es. Lo sigue siendo. Hasta cuando me escribe dejándome cartas con mensajes subrepticios, por debajo de mi puerta.

Es mi amante hoy, como lo fue en el pasado. Es mi amante a solas y frente a su dolorosamente aburrido novio. Es mi amante, de día y en la penumbra de su cuarto al que me sé depositar a escondidas.

Miro el anchuroso mar, acoplado ya en el vapor que me lleva rumbo a Boston y no hago más que recordar a Flora. Sus traviesos arrebatos en casa de sus padres, que son en verdad sus abuelos. Sus inocentes historias de perversos finales y esa necesidad clamorosa de agradarme, de retribuirme de alguna forma. Aún cuando siempre la supe digna de mis mayores desconfianzas, Flora fue siempre una luchadora en la guerra por conquistar parcelas efímeras de mis afectos.

Lo cierto es que sus propios conflictos existenciales no hacían sino espantarme. Y debo decir además que nunca satisfizo mis más sutiles deseos estéticos.

Conocí a Flora, un poco de casualidad en el segundo piso de un pequeño bar frente al mar, durante una accidental visita a playa Hermoza, una porción de litoral al sur de Santa Guadalupe del Embarcadero.

Flora acompañaba a su familia en una improvisada tertulia en torno a una mesa roja de plástico acrílico. Sobre ella, botellas de cerveza y canchita servidas, que matizaban una conversación sobre fútbol y comentarios políticos.

En la mesa se encontraba el dipsómano padre de Flora: don Germán; sus tíos Hector y Ramón; su tía Vicky; y sus abuelos Benjamín y Ernestina.

Aquella vez, subí a tomar un trago con mi viejo amigo, Elton, quien vivía en playa Hernoza, aunque no en la el área residencial, sino más bien cerca del barrio de pescadores. Nos ubicamos cerca de la mesa familiar de Flora con el ánimo de tener una vista privilegiada a la playa y al mar.

De inmediato, note la mirada lujuriosa y libertina de la traviesa Flora apuntándome decididamente como lo haría un poderoso reflector a la escena de una obra. Sin ella ser muy guapa, me llamó la atención la fuerza de sus negros ojos, de tal forma que me hacía perder el interés en la conversación de Elton.

Fueron cuarenta minutos de miradas mordaces y furtivas, ahogados en cerveza; que lo único que hacía era generar una combustión morbosa en mi mente. Me paré de la silla de plástico, típica de estos antros, miré a Flora con un rictus complice y bajé al primer piso a comprar un cigarro.

Sólo treinta segundos luego de bajar al primer piso del local, donde funcionaba una pequeña bodega, bajó Flora. Nos miramos e inmediatamente después que ella pidiera unas galletas me presenté sin más.

–

Soy Antonieto, ¿Cómo estás? - Dije de forma apurada.

–

Me llamo Flora – me respondió sonriendo.

Fue una presentación, que en realidad parecía protocolar, por el sólo hecho de seguir una formalidad social, un ritual administrativo simple que nos abriría las puertas al presentimiento de una aventura. Ambos teníamos claro lo que queríamos del otro.

–

Si quieres salimos un momento – le dije apresurado por el alcohol que

motivaba mis audacias.

–

Vamos, allí arriba mi familia tiene para rato, y quisiera sentir la brisa del mar.

En ese momento olvide que tenía a mi amigo esperando arriba, y me dejé llevar por mis malsanas intenciones liberadas por las cuatro botellas de cerveza que habíamos tomado.

–

Podemos conversar en las rocas – me dijo ella.

–

Si, claro vamos, adentro el lugar no está muy ventilado – dije yo procurando buscar un pretexto que mantuviera la secuencia de una conversación, sin que mis reales intenciones sean tan obvias.

Flora era una morena, no muy curvilínea aunque muy esmerada en atraer al genero masculino; a lo mejor esa actitud hizo que desde joven mantuviera tormentosos y fugaces romances con efebos tropicales acaecidos en la playa en temporada de verano.

Al acercarnos a la peña rocosa, a unos cincuenta metros del bar, Flora iba preguntándome si vivía cerca. Le respondí que sólo había ido a visitar a un amigo. Ella volvía a preguntar, en este caso, a qué me dedicaba; le respondí que estudiaba, aunque no en el país; sino en Boston. Nuevamente, Flora siguió inquisitiva, mostrando cierto interés en saber más de mi. El ambiente se iba rodeando mucho más de la humedad marina, a medida que nos acercabamos al mar.

La brisa hacía natural binomio con rumor de las olas, y nuevamente recordé a Morgana y nuestros paseos, esta vez en la tropical playa de Puerto Madero.

Ya sentados en un de las rocas del rompeolas de la playa, miraba atento el rostro de Flora, y mientras me hablaba de su vida universitaria sentía que el frío disminuía la efervescente motivación alcohólica que me invadía, con lo que reparaba en las imperfecciones del rostro de Flora.

Acepto que no me interesaba la conversación que Flora quería desarrollar conmigo, por lo que hice mi primera incursión al tomarla de la mano. Sus manos eran suaves, lo que me hizo pensar que Flora, de unos veintidós años no solía hacía ningún tipo de actividad manual. Ella no protesto y en cambio se acercó a mi. Aproveché el momento para abrazarla. Voltee su rostro al mío, y sin mediar resistencia de su parte, la besé sin recato.

Aquel sería el preludio de una relación que se extendería por unos nueve meses, hasta hoy que me voy a Boston a encontrarme con mi bella Morgana, dueña única de mis pasiones.

Recordando el 5 de abril

Hace 19 años el Perú perdió la democracia. En aquel momento nuestro país atravesaba una de sus peores crisis económicas y sociales, sólo comparable con los efectos ocasionados por la Guerra del Pacifico que, además, se desató un cinco de abril 1879.

El responsable de este ataque al estado de derecho fue Alberto Fujimori, por aquel entonces Presidente Constitucional de la República, elegido a través de un sistema democrático que siempre despreció.

Alberto Fujimori disolvió un congreso, aprovechando la insatisfacción popular, para diseñar una constitución a su medida, que le permitiría ser reelegido permanentemente y perpetuarse en el poder copando absolutamente todas las instituciones del estado y corrompiendo la mayor parte de organizaciones de la sociedad.

No se necesitaba destrozar el orden democrático cuando la economía ya estaba encaminada, y el GEIN ya estaba tras los pasos de Abimael Guzmán, a quien finalmente capturaron mientras Fujimori estaba pescando en el interior del país cerca de la frontera con Colombia.

El golpe de estado del año 1992 fue el inicio de una verdadera cleptocracia que le birló al Perú millones de dólares, consagrando la corrupción como un estilo de vida, como un medio natural de vida que hasta hoy congrega muchos adeptos, los mismos que añoran el regreso de la banda que nos gobernó.

Hoy el apellido Fujimori busca instaurarse en el poder nuevamente, a través de las reglas de juego que hace 19 años destruyó. Y busca hacerlo con muchos de aquellos que participaron en aquel régimen, muchos de los cuales aún tienen que responder.

Hoy conviene preguntarse qué tan tolerantes somos a la corrupción, qué tan grande es nuestra capacidad de indignarnos frente a la ruptura de los más básicos principios de la democracia.

Colores e imágenes de la campaña de PPK

Spot BCP con el Cuy Mágico

Ha sido lanzado un nuevo spot del BCP con el Cuy Mágico como protagonista principal, danzando a los acordes de una cumbia cuyo estribillo es: “Con el cuy cuy Mágico mi platita yo tendré, con el cuy cuy mágico exitoso yo seré”. Esto no tendría nada de raro si no estuviéramos a una semana de las elecciones, y cuando uno de los candidatos le debe a un Cuy, en este caso el PPKuy, gran parte de su éxito electoral.

Tampoco tendría nada de raro si los colores predominantes del spot no fueran el amarillo, celeste y rojo; que son los mismos colores de campaña del candidato PPK y su mascota.

Más aún, tampoco tendría nada de raro si el candidato Kuczynski, dueño del PPKuy, no tuviera relaciones político – comerciales con el señor Dionisio Romero Seminario, dueño del Banco de Crédito del Perú y dueño del Cuy Mágico.

Yo creo, finalmente, que el Cuy Mágico le consigue plata al PPKuy para ser exitoso.

J.J Rendón acepta implicitamente que Castañeda hace una mala campaña

J.J Rendón fue relacionado con la campaña de Castañeda Lossio, al punto que estuvo, aparentemente, a punto de ser asesor de su estrategia electoral. Sin embargo, de un momento a otro se confirmó que no sería parte del equipo solidario.

Las semanas han pasado, Castañeda ha caído en las encuestas hasta el 5to lugar, y su estrategia de propaganda no ha dado resultado; y parece a lo lejos que Rendón siente la pequeña satisfacción de no haber sido parte de ese fracaso.

Por lo menos eso se puede deducir de el comentario que le hace @melissita1204 en Twitter, cuando le pregunta a Rendón si había visto su último spot, y si podía ser considerado como ejemplo de lo que no se debía hacer en una campaña; a lo que Rendón responde: Totalmente.

Similitudes entre Chávez y Fujimori

Mucho se ha hablado de las similitudes y diferencias entre Alberto Fujimori y Hugo Chávez. Dos modelos ideológicos distantes, pero mellizos en el estilo de gobernar. Ambos apelan a las miserias de la población para aprovecharse de forma populista de sus necesidades.

Ambos gobernantes accedieron al poder de forma democrática y a través de procesos electorales limpios, sin embargo ambos buscaron perpetuarse en el poder a través de modificaciones y cambios constitucionales.

Ambos atacaron a la prensa libre, obviamente dejando algunos medios críticos para dar la imagen de pseudo democracia.

En 2004 Steve Ellner escribió un ensayo titulado "Análisis comparativo de dos variantes de populismo" publicado en la Revista Venezolana de Eonomía y Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad Central de Venezuela. Aquí expone diferentes aspectos que, a pesar de las diferencias ideológicas, hacen a estos dos dictadores iguales en esencia.

Amistades peligrosas

Nuevamente ese aspirante a little Napoleon caribeño que es Hugo Chávez asoma sus narices en el proceso electoral peruano a través de una declaración a los medios desde Uruguay.

Y aunque no lo dice de forma directa, implícitamente muestra su apoyo a la candidatura del nacionalista Ollanta Humala, a quien define como "buen soldado".

Definitivamente, y parafraseando a Marshall McLuhan, el medio es el mensaje. Es decir, no importa lo que diga Chávez de Humala, el sólo hecho de referirse a su candidatura genera una atmósfera que lo sitúa como su padre putativo o mentor ideológico.

Si esto último realmente representará una estocada a la candidatura de Humala, particularmente no lo creo. De hecho, mostrando un discurso bastante más radical, Humala obtuvo 48% de la votación nacional en el año 2006.

Viéndolo desde ese punto de vista, lo que Ollanta Humala debería hacer es sincerar su posición frente a Chávez y no ocultarla; después de todo una gran mayoría de peruanos admira los autoritarismos, sean de derecha populista (Fujimori) o de izquierda. Estos dos suman prácticamente el 42% de la intención actual de voto.

En su primera intervención sobre la candidatura de Ollanta Humala, Hugo Chávez calificó al postulante por Gana Perú como “un buen soldado”, y destacó su historial como militar. “Ahora hay un partido ahí, un proyecto… el pueblo peruano sabrá por quién votar”, afirmó el mandatario durante su visita a Uruguay.
El presidente de Venezuela agregó que, al vincularlo con la candidatura de Humala, se está intentando perjudicar al líder del nacionalismo. “Ya empezó la cosa… “Esos son los de Chávez, cuidado”... están tratando de dañarlo”, comentó. Luego añadió que “el Perú, de los peruanos, para los peruanos; y que pase lo que el pueblo peruano decida en democracia”.

En el momento que escribo este post los aliados de la Otán han decidido darle un ultimátum al caduco régimen libio de Muamar el Gaddafi con la finalidad de darle una "salida digna" y detener de una buena vez el derramamiento de sangre en el país norafricano.

En los últimos días algunas personas han hecho un símil entre las dictaduras latinoamericanas y árabes sin tomar en cuenta las notables diferencias culturales, religiosas y económicas que hay entre ambas realidades, aún cuando hay notables similitudes.

¿Pero cuáles son las características de este país afectado por la ola de revueltas que atraviesan los países musulmantes y qué lo llevó a esta situación?

Se dice que Libia ostenta nivel de desarrollo humano más alto del continente, así como la mayor esperanza de vida. Con una economía basada en la exportación del petróleo que representa el 95% del total de sus exportaciones es así que la economía de Libia es la sexta en África.

En 1977 se instaura la Yamahiriya Árabe Libia Popular y Socialista, que es presidida por el cuestionado Muammar el Gadafi conocido como "el hermano guia de la revolución"

Grupos como las FARC de Colombia, IRA de Irlanda, ETA de España, y otras organizaciones terroristas han sido vinculadas a Gaddafi, quien además ha sido involucrado con diferentes actividades terroristas al rededor del mundo que tienen que ver con la masacre de Munich en 1972; el atentado contra la discoteca berlinesa La Belle en 1986; el atentado contra el vuelo 103 de Pan Am en 1988; y el vuelo 772 de UTA en 1989.

Gaddafi ha sido una suerte de comodín político a lo largo de su vida en el poder estrechando vínculos primero con Francia, y luego con la vieja Unión de Repúblicas Socialistas Soviéticas. Fue partidario de la unión árabe, del anticomunismo, la unión islámica y el prosovietismo. De hecho Gaddafi fue uno de los creadores de la Unión Africana.

Trípoli ya había sido bombardeada por la administración estadounidense de Ronald Reagan en 1986, en la que murió una de las hijas de Gadafi. Sin embargo, posteriormente la relacion entre Estados Unidos y Libia se restauraría.

El régimen de Gaddafi ha intervenido militarmente a favor del gobierno militar de Uganda dirigido por Idi Amin durante la guerra con Tanzania. También intervino en su vecino Chad, donde se anexionó la Franja de Aozou, zona rica en Uranio.

Con el tiempo, y luego de dejar el patrocinio de grupos terroristas, así como la producción de armas de destrucción masiva; ha recibido el reconocimiento de la comunidad internacional, tanto así que Trípoli ha recibido la visita de diferentes dignatarios y autoridades de Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Francia, Italia y Alemania.

El régimen dictatorial de Gaddafi pretendió desarrollar una suerte de socialismo personal, entorno a su personalidad, e hizo interpretaciones de la democracia y "el gobierno del pueblo" a través de la publicación de El Libro Verde. Su gobierno expropió en un inicio diferentes compañías petroleras, aunque a partir del año 2000 les permite su ingreso para la exploración y exportación de este recurso.

Gaddafi es conocido por viajar escoltado por doscientas mujeres jóvenes y vírgenes, conocidas como la Guardia Amazónica.

La conexión Gaddafi - Chavez

Algunas personas consideran que existe algún tipo de similitud entre el gobierno de Hugo Chávez y Gaddafi. Para comenzar aunque a muchos no nos guste, Chavez llegó al poder a través de un proceso electoral democrático, y no ha torturado y asesinado a miles de sus compatriotas como lo hizo Gaddafi.

Sin embargo, y sólo por defender algún tipo de arcaico modelo personal socialista, Hugo Chávez saca la cara de forma sostenida por su colega norafricano, y su forma de gobernar, al punto de haberle regalado una réplica de la espada de Simón Bolivar.

Lo paradójico de todo esto es que, la revolución popular que en este momento atraviesa Libia ha nacido de su propia gente; lo cual revela una profunda contradicción en las convicciones chavistas.

Evidentemente la única intención del gobernante venezolano es defender su modelo incluso a costa de la misma gente que demanda un cambio, y generar una sociedad en torno al petróleo.

Cabe recordar con según Hugo Chávez, el movimiento bolivariano nace a partir del "caracazo" de febrero de 1989, la misma que fue en sí misma un movimiento popular del mismo modo que lo es el movimiento libio.

Recordando quién es Carlos Álvarez

Carlos Alvarez sería un excelente cómico si no tuviera esa proclividad a alquilarse a ciertos grupos políticos y económicos, como lo hizo en durante la época más difícil de la dictadura fujimorista. Hoy ha sido reciclado una vez más en el programa "Enemigos Públicos" en el canal de Schutz. Porque los viejos amores del pasado no se olvidan.

A propósito un texto de César Hildebrandt sobre "el mejor cómico" del Perú, y su prontuario fujimorista.

Al señor Carlos Álvarez le gustaba rematarse (pero no de risa sino al contado) cuando Fujimori mandaba, Montesinos asustaba, Canal 7 pagaba y la gente decente vomitaba si encendía la tele.

Era la época en que el señor Álvarez salía en los mítines re-reeleccionistas del jefe de la banda (cruzada) que atendía en Palacio de Gobierno y en su filial de Chorrillos (o sea el SIN).

El señor Álvarez cobraba en las ventanillas de Canal 7, recibía indicaciones del guionista Bressani, del productor Montesinos y del Akira Kurosawa de los vertederos (Alberto Fujimori), y con toda esa ayudantía detrás salía a la pantalla a enlodar a la oposición, a calumniar a los díscolos y a hacerles muecas a los desafectos (a tanto el insulto y a cheque en mano la inmundicia y a letra a 30 días el kilo de saña).

Y como el señor Álvarez es muy talentoso y es muy artista –y por eso fue reclutado por la mafia que usó a Lúcar como entretenimiento y a la señora Bozzo como la bruja del 69-, claro que hacía reír y por supuesto que era eficaz en su campaña de desacreditar a la democracia y de pintar como aves de mal agüero a los que peleaban en las calles por la desinfección del país.

Se reían los televidentes con estruendo y con eco se reía Montesinos y rabiaba la oposición y cobraba Álvarez. Y hasta salía Álvarez en los mítines del autor de “La Cantuta” y otras marchas fúnebres. Salía feliz Álvarez a bailar -con la anchura de todas sus caderas de folclórica in péctore- el baile del Chino, que sabía de memoria y que llegó a ser su cortina musical, el timbre de su celular y el himno que tarareaba cada vez que pasaba por caja en Canal 7 (el pago oficial) y por Cajatambo en el SIN (las 30 piezas de plata de cada bolo).

Todo era podridamente perfecto en ese mundo del año 2000, cuando la Alemania nazi-andina que iba ser el Perú estaba dispuesta a entregarse al Tercer Reich de Fujimori.

Y en ese mundo, claro, el señor Álvarez era, gracias a sus prodigios de transformista teatral, una especie de Eva Braun al servicio de la nueva Alemania (quise decir, del nuevo Perú).

Hasta con un letrero que tenía pintado el año 3000 salía Carlitos Álvarez en los mítines de Fujimori mientras competía en bamboleo de caderas con don Francisco Tudela, el Canciller de Jade.

Con ese letrero que enseñaba por todo el escenario –donde la reina indiscutible era Rossy War-, Carlitos Álvarez proponía el milenio del que le pagaba en ese momento.

Años atrás, Héctor Delgado Parker, asesor de Alan García, le encomendó a Álvarez despacharse con el personaje de “Popy” Olivera. Olivera era enemigo –en tanto que cónyuge de una señora Wiese- de Alan García y para el buen Héctor era importante que Álvarez ridiculizara al máximo a Olivera poniéndole el nombre de un payaso venezolano y pintándolo siempre como un maniaco de la estupidez aniñada. Álvarez obedeció (con su cheque respectivo) y durante años “Popy” Olivera se exprimió ante cámaras.

Cuando don Baruch Ivcher era un fujimorista vestido de caqui y con galones de asimilado, Carlitos Álvarez fue el furgón de la fanfarria y el intérprete de todos los odios –de los miles de odios- que don Baruch Ivcher decidió expresar por la vía del humor (el humor de Álvarez, por supuesto). ¿Había un político faltoso? Le pedían a Álvarez que lo “destruyera” pintándolo de ladrón, borracho, idiota o degenerado (se podía escoger y había categorías no excluyentes) ¿Expulsaron a un periodista de la TV porque ya se venía el 5 de abril del 92 y había que desbrozar el terreno? Llamaban a Álvarez y él lo pintaba como mermelero, maricón, enano, drogadicto (se podía escoger, dependiendo de los ceros a la derecha que tuviera el cheque de fin de mes). Y cuando Ivcher se peleó con Fujimori y tuvo que irse del Perú porque sus ex socios de aventura querían inmovilizarlo debajo de una losa, Álvarez preguntó al Oráculo de Delta (Mónica) a quién debía de obedecer. Un vozarrón mandatorio que parecía venir de la prefectura onomatopéyica de Kagoshima respondió:

-¡Obedecerás, como siempre, al que pague!

Y Carlitos obedeció a la voz que le ordenaba seguir obedeciendo. Así que, según el testimonio imborrable de Matilde Pinchi Pinchi -cronista de la cutra, corresponsal-cama adentro de las finanzas del SIN-, Carlitos Álvarez empezó a frecuentar Chorrillos y a recibir sobres de manila con papeles impresos por la Casa de la Moneda.

Cuando cayó Fujimori, el sistema anticorrupción escuchó a la Pinchi y llamó al pinche de Fujimori (o sea Montesinos) y le hizo la pregunta más imbécil de la historia:

-Señor Montesinos: ¿a quién estaban dirigidos los sobres con dinero que tenían escrito el nombre de Carlos Álvarez?

Montesinos se dio cuenta de que la cucaracha Martina, previo porro, estaba haciendo de fiscal. Así que respondió:

-A Carlos Álvarez.
-¿A Carlos Álvarez, el cómico? –le preguntaron dos abejorros asistentes.
-No– dijo Montesinos, recordando su etapa de guionista de humor teledirigido-.

Y añadió:

-Carlos Álvarez era el nombre falso de uno de los agentes del Servicio de Inteligencia.-
-¿Y otro de esos nombres falsos era Tulio Loza? –preguntó la cucaracha Martina alisándose una antena.
-Así es –respondió Montesinos mientras se cagaba de la risa.

Así que Carlitos Álvarez le debe su libertad a Vladimiro Montesinos. Bueno, le debe un montón de cosas pero podríamos decir que la libertad es la deuda más cara que el humorista deberá pagarle en serio, algún día, al co-autor de la letra de “Barrios Altos” (porque la letra con sangre entra).

Por eso es que Carlitos Álvarez causa una risa convulsiva, imparable y peligrosa para el corazón cuando ahora habla de “la libertad de expresión amenazada” y cuando afirma, ante la anuencia de sus amigos de pantalla y simpatías, que cuando sale con la cara de Rómulo León, la barba de Rómulo León, la voz de Rómulo León, las frases de Rómulo León, no está aludiendo a Rómulo León.

Y la risa que produce Carlitos llega a ser ruido molesto digno de Serenazgo cuando, encima, dice que decirle rata a León no es insultarlo porque, cómo no, lo de rata lo dijo el presidente García y ya sabemos que este humorista suele ser cola del que manda y rabo del que paga.

A mí, particularmente, Rómulo León, desde un punto de vista político, me da náuseas. Pero sería indigno de mi parte decir que cuando digo que Rómulo León me da náuseas políticas no me estoy refiriendo a Rómulo León. No hay que ser rata para actuar así. Hay que ser ratón de Fujimori y Mickey de Montesinos.

Y por si acaso: esta columna sí se refiere a Carlos Álvarez, el cómico que da risa no sólo porque es brillante y hasta magistral sino por razones que él quisiera ignorar.

Porque el humor no tiene por qué ser invertebrado. Charles Chaplin se enfrentó a la industria cinematográfica y venció. Al gran Lenny Bruce le hicieron el FBI y los conservadores la vida imposible. Hasta el primer Cantinflas (en blanco y negro) llegó a ser un pelao contestatario. En relación al poder, Carlitos Álvarez, en cambio, siempre está de humor para servirlo.

El Perú es Lima, Lima es Eisha, y Eisha es PPK

Qué extraño síntoma, qué exótico rictus genético tenemos los limeños que nos hace creernos el ombligo del Perú que no somos. En que clase cercado mental habitamos diariamente, que no nos permite reconocer lo que sucede en el resto del nuestro a veces macondiano país. Y es que a veces parece que nosotros los limeñitos sufrimos (o disfrutamos) de una especie de superlativo egocentrismo social, que nos hace presumir que si estamos bien (o eso creemos), el resto del país está bien.

Lo de los últimos días merece una especial atención de tipo sociológica o antropológica, porque revive (si es que alguna vez estuvieron muertas) viejas diferencias de sociales que es necesario que queden definitivamente en el pasado si es que en realidad queremos construir un proyecto civilizado de país.

Y me refiero a la defensa dogmática e incluso esquizoide que hacen algunas personas de un modo de proceder socioeconómicamente que requiere ser revisado cuidadosamente, y que su solo cuestionamiento, es no sólo impensado, sino que convierte a los cuestionadores en una suerte de leprosos sociales.

Existe, entre esta población, la noción de que el crecimiento de un país se hace evidente sólo a través de la construcción de más centros comerciales. Y que somos más primermundistas mientras más gente en el mundo se embriague con nuestro Pisco o se aglotone con nuestro Ceviche.

Sin embargo, según la Defensoría del Pueblo a febrero del 2011, tenemos 234 conflictos sociales; de los que 160 son conflictos activos y 74 son latentes. Es decir, seguimos siendo un país sentado en un Fukushima social, que puede reventar en cualquier momento, como ya lo hizo Bagua y Arequipa,

Sin embargo a pocos parece importarles desde Eisha, donde eso de que "en Lima hasta las moscas se acojudan" se hace descaradamente evidente. Y es que, como ya lo dijo César Hildebrandt, el sólo hecho de pretender elegir al señor Kuczynski es jugar con fuego al pie de un Huascarán de polvora y anfo, que reventará cuando los proyectos mineros se ejecuten a punta de tanques, y es que el señor PPK (hincha de Bush), es la versión brutalmente sincera de Alan Garcia.

Muchos de esos limeñitos, que además son jóvenes, no sólo desprecian esa urgente realidad, sino que simplemente la ignoran o no la comprenden, lo que revela que la crisis educativa no sólo está en el C/D sino también en el A/B.

Y es que, estos fieles de la iglesia mujaidín de Adam Smith, realmente están convencidos que San Isidro es New York, y que porque viene Paul McCartney estamos en Everest del desarrollo Occidental; mientras a nadie le importa Pisco (a unos kilometros de Eisha), ni los muertos que tendremos en el próximo friaje del sur. Pero claro, el Perú avanza., y esos que se quejan son unos resentidos sociales que no aprecian nuestro crecimiento de 8% anual.

Definitivamente algo no anda bien en la hechura de nuestro país, algún tipo de anomia congénita o hueveo social, donde un subempleado vestido de "Kuy" es el mejor argumento de un campaña realmente patética. Después de esto, seguiremos creyendonos que el Perú es Lima, Lima es Eisha, y Eisha es PPK.

138 centers of new lines discovered in Nazca

A team of Japanese researchers found in the Nazca desert more than a hundred lines centers. This is a terrific discovery taking account no maps were used by archaeologists.

There are 138 little hills in which a set of lines can be found. There are 8000 ceramic pieces scattered around showing geometrical draws.

There are drwas of animal and plants, coloured with white, red, orange and other, according to Masato Sakai from the Yamagata University (Japan).

This team of archaeologists are trying to figure out the period in which these designs were made, while trying to know the eventual use to whish they gave.

Researchers had previously announced the discovery of two new figures. These discoveries were located at the southern end of this historic area, close to the temple ceremonial Cahuachi.

I would recommend you to take this tour at the beginning, due to the fact that Cusco and Machu Picchu will be the best part of your trip, and this could appear desappointing

The trip to the ruins of Pachacamac do not need to be planned as a solo day trip,on the contrary, it could be part as a daily stage around Lima: For example, in the morning visit the Archaeological museum, then take a taxi to Pachacamac from miraflores to Panamaricana Sur.; take lunch and visit the Gold Museum in the afternoon. This creates an interesting round trip, which is to be completed in one day.

The complete round - trip with the costs, including agreed waiting times, about 25 to 30 € for three or four travelers which not expensive; but I could take you in my truck for $25 all day . Individuals take a cheap microbus from Santa Catalina or a colectivo from University Park to Lurin. The trip takes about an hour. Toy have to tell the driver that you only up to the ruins of Pachacamac (and not in the city) so that he stops by the ruins. The ruins are open from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm, and admission costs 1.50 €.

Lurin Valley
Pachacamac is located in the Lurin Valley, about 30 km south of Lima. The Lurin Valley, Valle Verde, or the green valley of Lima and is the most scenically and beautiful valley near the main city. In addition to the archaeological (eg Pachacamac) and tourist attractions, the valley represents the best opportunity to enjoy pure air. The Oracle (Huaca) of World Creator Pachacamac was asked for any advice. Pilgrims traveled hundreds of miles and took precious votive offerings with their specialties. A big city grew up around the sanctuary, but nothing of this remains. The Inca conquered Pachacamc in the 15th century, and built the largest sun temple rising an artificial pyramid. In 1533 the gold-hungry Spaniards stole the graves and golden ornaments around the temple, many of them were a link between Inkas and previous cultures like Tiwanaku culture.

Pachacamac Tour

There is a small museum at the entrance, in which we will find the most valuable pieces excavated in 1938, among them the finely crafted wooden pillar of Pachacamac The wells of the figure were once paved with gold or silver. Also it is shown ceramics and fabrics. Not far from the museum, there is a semisubterraner, reconstructed complex of buildings,: the Casa de las Mamaconas whose meaning is disputed.

Next, there is a road leading to a smaller hill on which, Pachacamac - Temple stood. Some remnants of terraces with Berna Lung are well preserved. In front of the viewer there is a powerful artificial hill built on the end of the 15th Century: the Inca sun temple.

Since the entire complex of ruins are extensive, take a quick walk at least for an hour. If you decide to come with me, we can take a ride inside the complex. If you are coming on your own there are Buses to the center of Lima that can be hailed on the street in front of the ruins.

For those who has more time available, there is always the possibility to travel a little further down the Panamericana Sur to the south on another day trip. Past the beaches of Punta Hermosa, Punta Negra, San Bartolo, Santa María, Las Palmas Pucusana and get to Cañete. The town was established about 150 km south of Lima in 1556 by order of the Viceroy Marquez de Cañete..

Tour 2: Ruins of Puruchuco - Cajamarquilla - Chosica (Carretera Central)

This trip has an archaeological interest. In order to get to these ruins your should go Lima Centrre at the corner of Montevideo / Ormeño, take a colectivo to Chosica. Departures are between 6.00 a.m. und 21.00 o'clock, whenever the Colectivo is full up, it costs about 1 €. Puruchuco is about 7 km away from Lima Centre, taking the Carretera Central, which is going from Lima to the Andes. In Puruchuco we will find ceramics around the corridors and chambers; there is a little museum in which we will find textiles and musical instruments. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday: 9.00 - 17.00, admission cost 1 euro.

Cajamarquilla

Right after that we go right to the Hacienda Nievería and the mile in a ruined city behind Cajamaquilla. It is known that this place was an urban center, part of the small kingdom of Cuismancu. The ruins made of adobe consists of three groups of terraces and pyramid-like structures that are riddled with labyrinthine streets. It is open. from Tuesday - Sunday 9-17 clock. € 1.

Chosica

Chosica is a nice place in which we will have the opportunity to visit some ruins like the small town of San Juan de Pariache. Callao, the biggest and most important port in Peru (600,000 inhabitants) it is 13 km away from Lima Centre. Lima and Callao are virtually the same city. The most interesting attraction is the 1774 Fort Real Felipe, which is a Military History Museum (Tue-Thu, Sat, Sun 9 - 12 and 15 - clock 17, admission 2 € for foreigners). Just around the corner is the museum of the Peruvian Navy (closed Mondays).

Adventure close to Lima, Perú, Antioquía by truck

Traveling close to Lima give us the opportunity to go up the hills, which is the gate to the Peruvian Andes, being just 40 minutes away from the sea. It is an adventure you can't avoid, if you are in Lima because we will be in touch with pure air, and beautiful landscapes around our way.

This little trip starts in the district of Cieneguilla; just 30 minutes away from Lima centre. Many people do this travel by cycling or trekking; in this way I took my own truck. Doing it by trekking you can take the old Inca Trail that was used by the old empire of Inkas to go from the city of Cusco to Pachacamac temple in Lima.

There are some archaeological complexes as living memories of the ancient royal trail used by the Emperor when he needed to get some advise from the God Pachacamac. Nowadays we can go into those buidings and try to imagine how was those days.

Before we get to Antioquia (our final destiny), we will pass little towns like Nieve Nieve and Chontay, places charched of myths and legends. These places are ideal to spend a nice doing camping and buying some handicrafts and local specialities.

Finally we will get to Antioquia town, a colourful place decorated with birds and rainbows painted in every fachade, in every wall. The landscape changed from the desert to a countryside green, which is very good for our souls.

One of the best things about summer in Peru is going to our lovely beaches as much as possible. Against many other points of view I strongly believe that the best ones are located in Northen Peru. in Lima people have the opportunity to spend a good time at the seaside. In Lima, we have the Costa Verde, which is a circuit of beaches 30 minutes away from Lima centre. Those ones are nice, but during high session they could be overcrowded.

In Miraflores people learn surfing, those classes are given by some "schools" scatered at the seaside and many tourists come together to enjoy the waves.

Then you can take some sea food, which is one the the best in the world! There are some restaurants by the seaside you can go and try these delicious dishes.

Many organizations try to organize and develop an integrated work related with internal communications, which must be conducted by a sensitive and experienced skilled professional, able to plan a project based on measurable goals.

But ¿which must be the main tips to set up an internal communications office?

To set up an internal communications office, Previously, it had to be necessary to identify an organizational problem. Anything that motivates the Board, to set up internal channels of communication, able to generate cohesion and a powerful organizational culture, at least it should be its mission.

Some organizations, moreover those multinational ones, have already a tradition on recruiting well skilled communication professionals, but on the other hand, the rest of local businesses tend to consider internal communications as a esoteric issue.

1)Introduce the Idea
One of the main promoters and sponsors of an office related with internal communications must be the Human Resource Manager. He should be the main concerned in developing specialized channels that make him able to take the correct decisions. The Human Resource Management should, not only, be encharged of operative tasks, but to take the leadership of the strategy to strength the corporative culture. The HR Manager, is who should get the idea and introduce it to the Board.

I think that the idea must be introduced in organizational levels, I mean, How the organization would be with an internal communication office working, and how would it be without it? How much resources would the project need, in relation with the final outcome? How much would the project save for the company?

It is always a good idea to introduce a project showing its economic advantages. A businessman needs to buy anything profitable.

2)Recruiting the correct professional
It is not easy to get the right one. Well experienced and skilled enough to develop such a project. The project will demand a professional, with not only communication knowledge, but with a background that let him understand the social, cultural and economic reality, not only in national terms, but international terms too. Am I asking a lot? Come on! He is the man who will motivate the human resources at the organization.

Another important issue is related with the professional's previous experience. I mean Can a retail experienced professional can do it in industrial level? Can A professional who worked for a fast food, develop a successful experience in mining sector? Obviously those are elements necessary to take account.
3)Planning the office
This issue is vey importan and depend on the business necessities. Particularly, I point out that a communication project must be strongly oriented to quantified outcomes, based on a solid structure. I desagree with those ideas that consider communications as a source of entertainment for workers, this is an incorrect way of seeing organizational communications development.

At this level it is necessary an internal research, I mean to apply focus groups, inteviews and surveys among workers. Also, It's very important to listen to people around, in the canteen for example. A good communicator will notice those details that enable him to design his communication project.

A communication office has to define its mission and vission, to set its goals and indicators.

4)Resources
The resources that will manage the internal communications office must be approved by the Board, though previously worked by the new internal communications head and the Human Resources Manager. They should have based the project in the current business situation and that will give them a glimpse of those human, economic and material necessary resources.

5)Lauching internal branding
Since I am an advocate and practitioner of internal branding, I see workers as real internal customers who try to satisfy their effective and real information necessity, and in change they will adopt some kind of behaviour wished by the company. That's why I believe that it is necessary to develop an internal communications brand that focus the main communications k-drivers.

Lets take account that internal communications function is a facilitator for the company. Its main targets are the managers, who need fresh internal trends to take decisions later.

Adventure is always close to you if you want. Even more if you are coming to Perú. Usually, when people come to Lima as tourists, they spend just some time visiting Miraflores, Lima Centre and Pachacamac Temple; but there are many other interesting and beautiful places to see and visit. Here I want you to know some other places you can go for if you have some time and a good guide book.

In the valley of Lima you have three main rivers. Rimac River, Santa Eulalia River, Mala River and Lurin River; among them there are little towns and beautiful landscapes, just 45 minutes away from Lima Centre. Places full of history.

The travel begins in Cieneguilla, which is 20 minutes away from Lima. In which you will find an archaeological complex that belongs to Ychma culture (1100 bc).

After that you will have the opportunity find a nice restaurant with local dishes like pachamanca or ceviche.

In the town of Nieve Nieve you will find lovely painted facades. Lovely multi coloured houses decorated by artists from Lima.

Peru congress approves construction of highway to Machu Picchu

This is a good news because it will be a cheaper alternative to get to the ruins of Machu Picchu in Cuzco Perú. Some years ago I had the opportunity to get to the ruins through the way Santa María - Santa Teresa - Machu Picchu.

Peruvian congress officially passed the law stating that the Machu Picchu – Santa Teresa – Santa Maria highway construction is of public necessity and priority national interest, and approved a proposal to conduct studies at Santa Teresa - Mollepata road.

The Law No. 29584 was published in El Peruano official gazette and signed by the Congress President Jorge Zumaeta.

The project of the Machu Picchu-Santa Teresa-Santa Maria highway was unanimously approved by the congress on September 9th.

The highway will become an alternative route to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, currently accessible only by train or by a multi day hike on the Inca Trail.

Spring is coming to Lima

Yesterday I had the opportunity to work as a tourist guide for a day. A Venezuelan girl came to Peru to spend some days in this city, and after go sightseeing we ended watching this lovely sunset I wanted to share with you. These pictures were taken in the southern district of Chorrillos 30 minutes away from Lima Centre.

Not many people in Lima appreciate how lucky we are to have the beach close to the city, the fact that anyone can walk along the shore and enjoy simple things like this powerful sunset.

Since Spring is just around the corner, here in Lima the sun is shining frecuently, and this improve the people's mood. Nothing's better that try a delicious cebiche by the beach with some cold beers.

Our tour was Lima centre, some museums and churches, a cebichería called Puerto Esondido and funally the Beach of Pescadores in Chorrillos.

La Comunicación Interna en Deloitte

El posicionamiento de la marca Deloitte entre todos sus profesionales constituye una parte importante de la estrategia de comunicación de la firma. En Deloitte se desarrollan continuamente nuevos canales e iniciativas para obtener una mayor eficacia en la transmisión de la información interna.

Por la propia naturaleza de los servicios que presta Deloitte (auditoría, consultoría, asesoramiento fiscal y legal, asesoramiento en transacciones) la mayoría de sus profesionales pasan gran parte de su tiempo en los clientes, por lo que una comunicación interna eficaz es absolutamente fundamental. No sólo en lo que se refiere a la información práctica (cursos de formación, herramientas de gestión interna, novedades…) sino también a la hora de compartir los valores de la firma, conocer las mejores prácticas de otros países, etc…

Deloitte cuenta con una estrategia de comunicación interna muy definida y estructurada en varios tipos:

- Comunicación de liderazgo (efectuada por diferentes responsables de la firma como el presidente, los socios responsables de líneas de servicio o áreas geográficas, etc)

- Comunicación de negocio (lanzamiento de nuevos servicios, logro de nuevos clientes, innovación, etc)

- Comunicación de recursos humanos (formación, reclutamiento, acción social, club deportivo, etc.)

- Comunicación de marca (eventos organizados/patrocinados por la firma, apariciones destacadas en prensa, etc.)

Además, se utilizan numerosos canales de comunicación interna (tanto digitales, como en papel, como a través de reuniones y encuentros), buscando siempre la mayor efectividad de los mensajes. Por poner algunos ejemplos, todos los profesionales de Deloitte reciben semanalmente una comunicación electrónica multimedia con las principales noticias sobre la firma que se han producido durante esos días.

Reciben cada tres meses la revista interna “Punto de Vista”, donde se recogen periódicamente reportajes y noticias sobre la firma (en España y en todo el mundo), no sólo de negocio, sino también de acción social, responsabilidad social corporativa, participación de los equipos deportivos de Deloitte en diferentes torneos, etc.

Aparate de la comunicación interna dirigida a todos los profesionales de la firma, Deloitte cuenta con canales específicos para las diferentes líneas de servicio e industrias (newsletters, boletines, vídeos…) en los que se recogen aspectos más concretos de determinadas áreas de negocio.

Para su comunicación interna Deloitte utiliza numerosos soportes, y hace un uso destacado de los vídeos, un formato que se utiliza con muchos y muy diversos objetivos: formación, divulgación de comunicados del presidente…

Encuesta para medir la eficacia de la comunicación interna

En Deloitte se realiza periódicamente una encuesta interna, con el objetivo de comprobar el grado de satisfacción de los profesionales con la comunicación interna que reciben y con los canales utilizados. En este estudio se pretende conocer tres grandes bloques de información.

En primer lugar, si los profesionales de la firma tienen un conocimiento adecuado de la realidad de la firma (áreas de actividad, negocio, servicios…).

En segundo lugar, si la información que ofrecen los canales de comunicación que se están utilizando actualmente es valorada positivamente.

Por último, la encuesta busca conocer cómo encaja la comunicación interna en el día a día de los trabajadores y cómo valoran estos la información que reciben. La última encuesta fue completada por más de 400 profesionales y el análisis de sus respuestas permitió obtener una serie de conclusiones que se están utilizando para mejorar la comunicación interna.

Por un lado, los profesionales de Deloitte tienen un grado de conocimiento de la firma notable. Cuanto mayor es la valoración de conocimiento de la firma, mayor es también la satisfacción que se tiene con la información recibida, y más informado se siente el personal.

Por otro lado, se constató que en líneas generales existe una satisfacción media alta con los canales de comunicación actuales (3,58 sobre 5), siendo la información de la Intranet española la más valorada, seguida de los comunicados corporativos y de la revista interna. Sólo un 1% de los encuestados manifestó que prescindiría de la Intranet.

En cuanto a los soportes preferidos para recibir la información, los profesionales de Deloitte prefieren el formato e-mail (59,4%) frente a la Intranet (35,7%) y el papel (14%).

La comunicación interna en el incendio del Windsor

El sábado 12 de febrero de 2005, hacia las 23:30 horas, la sede de Deloitte en Madrid, situada en el edificio Windsor, sufrió un incendio que afectó a 28 de las 30 plantas del inmueble. 20 de dichas plantas estaban ocupadas por Deloitte, lo que afectó a 1.600 empleados de la firma, durante la temporada alta de auditoría. (el 31 de marzo es la fecha tope para que las empresas cotizadas presenten sus estados financieros)

La desaparición del edificio suponía afrontar una multitud de riesgos relacionados con los empleados de Deloitte. Los más importantes eran:

- Posibilidad de víctimas en el incendio

- Sin edificio o sede, la firma deja de existir. (efecto icono)

- Posibilidad de despidos, de retrasos en el cobro de las nóminas,…

- Pérdida de información básica y necesaria para la realización de los trabajos.

- Traslado de la sede al extrarradio de Madrid

La estrategia de la comunicación de crisis se condujo en relación a los riesgos apuntados a medida que éstos se hacían más o menos patentes y fue variando en intensidad y contenido durante las dos o tres semanas en las que se desarrollaron acciones del plan de crisis.

En los primeros diez días tras el incendio y de forma paulatina se dio respuesta a todos y cada uno de los principales interrogantes que hubieran podido surgirles a los empleados:

- Inexistencia de víctimas

- Continuidad de la actividad normal de negocio desde el primer día

- No hubo despidos ni retrasos en el cobro de las nóminas

- Gracias a sistemas de seguridad como los backups externos y la bunkerización del CPD (Centro de Proceso de Datos), no se perdió información de clientes necesaria para la realización de los trabajos de auditoría.

- Permanencia de la sede en el centro de Madrid.

Las mayores dificultades para hacer fluir la información se produjeron los primeros días por la falta de medios tecnológicos, de manera que se pasó de una comunicación tradicional, al principio, a una comunicación más sofisticada, a medida que se iban recuperando las herramientas tecnológicas (email, intranet, web, etc.)

La tradicional “comunicación descendente” o “en cascada” y un teléfono de atención al empleado sirvieron para que el lunes, menos de 48 horas después del incendio, la casi totalidad de los 1.600 empleados de la oficina de Madrid supieran qué tenían que hacer y dónde dirigirse.

Posteriormente, el e-mail y la intranet fueron los medios más usados. Otros hechos destacados en la gestión de la de la comunicación interna durante la crisis fueron las siguientes:

- Se rompió la 1ª regla de Comunicación Interna: “Los empleados no deben enterarse nunca por los medios de las cosas que pasen en la empresa”. En este caso se aprovechó la potencia de los medios de comunicación para una mayor difusión de los mensajes. (“si lo dice la tele, será verdad”)

- Importancia de la comunicación emocional; encuentro de empleados de la oficina de Madrid (El CEO frente a todos con apoyo de videos testimoniales)

¿Se puede ser un aspirante a la felicidad siendo más bien un asistente aplicado de la tragedia? ¿Se puede engañar y embaucar constantemente a la verdad, para ser un torpe y voluntario invento pérfido y sin gracia?

Sí se puede, y lo compruebo día a día, lo veo aquí y allá. Pero sí tuviera que encarnar aquello que veo cada mañana en sólo una persona, esa desgraciada alma sería la de Flora Carbalho.

Flora es toda ella un misterioso acertijo, una subrepticia adivinanza tapizada barrocamente de superficiales lecturas, poses estudiadas y una lascivia sin prohibiciones morales. Ni siquiera ella misma sabría decir de qué puerto provienen sus navíos, ni qué bandera flameaba en su azotado existir.

Ella, su nombre, sus emociones y su vida fueron quince primeros años de falsedades consuetudinarias; ambivalencias que llegaron a su fin con un viaje y una revelación.

Fueron pues, las playas de Santa Guadalupe del Embarcadero, escenario teatral de sus primeros arrebatos adolescentes: furtivos marinos, hijos de familias notables (y no tan notables), deportistas y pequeños escritores quienes incendiaron por primera vez las praderas inmaculadas de su morena piel.

Curiosa e intuitiva, supo ser buena amante de sus amamantes. Fue una brillante amante. Fue mi amante. Y sí que lo fue. Y aún lo es. Lo sigue siendo. Hasta cuando me escribe dejándome cartas con mensajes subrepticios, por debajo de mi puerta.

Es mi amante hoy, como lo fue en el pasado. Es mi amante a solas y frente a su dolorosamente aburrido novio. Es mi amante, de día y en la penumbra de su cuarto al que me sé depositar a escondidas.

Miro el anchuroso mar, acoplado ya en el vapor que me lleva rumbo a Boston y no hago más que recordar a Flora. Sus traviesos arrebatos en casa de sus padres, que son en verdad sus abuelos. Sus inocentes historias de perversos finales y esa necesidad clamorosa de agradarme, de retribuirme de alguna forma. Aún cuando siempre la supe digna de mis mayores desconfianzas, Flora fue siempre una luchadora en la guerra por conquistar parcelas efímeras de mis afectos.

Lo cierto es que sus propios conflictos existenciales no hacían sino espantarme. Y debo decir además que nunca satisfizo mis más sutiles deseos estéticos.

Conocí a Flora, un poco de casualidad en el segundo piso de un pequeño bar frente al mar, durante una accidental visita a playa Hermoza, una porción de litoral al sur de Santa Guadalupe del Embarcadero.

Flora acompañaba a su familia en una improvisada tertulia en torno a una mesa roja de plástico acrílico. Sobre ella, botellas de cerveza y canchita servidas, que matizaban una conversación sobre fútbol y comentarios políticos.

En la mesa se encontraba el dipsómano padre de Flora: don Germán; sus tíos Hector y Ramón; su tía Vicky; y sus abuelos Benjamín y Ernestina.

Aquella vez, subí a tomar un trago con mi viejo amigo, Elton, quien vivía en playa Hernoza, aunque no en la el área residencial, sino más bien cerca del barrio de pescadores. Nos ubicamos cerca de la mesa familiar de Flora con el ánimo de tener una vista privilegiada a la playa y al mar.

De inmediato, note la mirada lujuriosa y libertina de la traviesa Flora apuntándome decididamente como lo haría un poderoso reflector a la escena de una obra. Sin ella ser muy guapa, me llamó la atención la fuerza de sus negros ojos, de tal forma que me hacía perder el interés en la conversación de Elton.

Fueron cuarenta minutos de miradas mordaces y furtivas, ahogados en cerveza; que lo único que hacía era generar una combustión morbosa en mi mente. Me paré de la silla de plástico, típica de estos antros, miré a Flora con un rictus complice y bajé al primer piso a comprar un cigarro.

Sólo treinta segundos luego de bajar al primer piso del local, donde funcionaba una pequeña bodega, bajó Flora. Nos miramos e inmediatamente después que ella pidiera unas galletas me presenté sin más.

Soy Antonieto, ¿Cómo estás? - Dije de forma apurada.
Me llamo Flora – me respondió sonriendo.

Fue una presentación, que en realidad parecía protocolar, por el sólo hecho de seguir una formalidad social, un ritual administrativo simple que nos abriría las puertas al presentimiento de una aventura. Ambos teníamos claro lo que queríamos del otro.

Si quieres salimos un momento – le dije apresurado por el alcohol que motivaba mis audacias.
Vamos, allí arriba mi familia tiene para rato, y quisiera sentir la brisa del mar.

En ese momento olvide que tenía a mi amigo esperando arriba, y me dejé llevar por mis malsanas intenciones liberadas por las cuatro botellas de cerveza que habíamos tomado.

Podemos conversar en las rocas – me dijo ella.
Si, claro vamos, adentro el lugar no está muy ventilado – dije yo procurando buscar un pretexto que mantuviera la secuencia de una conversación, sin que mis reales intenciones sean tan obvias.

Flora era una morena, no muy curvilínea aunque muy esmerada en atraer al genero masculino; a lo mejor esa actitud hizo que desde joven mantuviera tormentosos y fugaces romances con efebos tropicales acaecidos en la playa en temporada de verano.

Nuevamente, Flora siguió inquisitiva, mostrando cierto interés en saber más de mi. El ambiente se iba rodeando mucho más de la humedad marina, a medida que nos acercabamos al mar.

La brisa hacía natural binomio con rumor de las olas, y nuevamente recordé a Morgana y nuestros paseos, esta vez en la tropical playa de Puerto Madero.

Ya sentados en un de las rocas del rompeolas de la playa, miraba atento el rostro de Flora, y mientras me hablaba de su vida universitaria sentía que el frío disminuía la efervescente motivación alcohólica que me invadía, con lo que reparaba en las imperfecciones del rostro de Flora.

Acepto que no me interesaba la conversación que Flora quería desarrollar conmigo, por lo que hice mi primera incursión al tomarla de la mano. Sus manos eran suaves, lo que me hizo pensar que Flora, de unos veintidós años no solía hacía ningún tipo de actividad manual. Ella no protesto y en cambio se acercó a mi. Aproveché el momento para abrazarla. Voltee su rostro al mío, y sin mediar resistencia de su parte, la besé sin recato.

Aquel sería el preludio de una relación que se extendería por unos nueve meses, hasta hoy que me voy a Boston a encontrarme con mi bella Morgana, dueña única de mis pasiones.

In 1996 I was studying at San Marcos University, in Lima, Perú. At the time I was studying social communications and, one of the subjects we had was photography. I have to say that I didn't have the same talent my mates had. In fact I never liked my own pictures. We had to optimize our photographic sense, and in order to do that, had to go out and take shot images of the street, or landscapes with some sociological meaning. Here some pictures I took by the time.

WHO THE KNIGHTS OF THE CAPE WERE AND THE OATH THEY SWORE

On the afternoon of June 5, 1541, twelve Spaniards, all of whom had been honored by the king for their exploits in the conquest of Peru, met at the mansion of Pedro de San Millán.

The house that sheltered them consisted of a parlor, five rooms, and a large open area. Six leather chairs, an oak bench and a dirty table flush with the wall constituted the furniture of the parlor. Thus, just like the clothing of the structure’s inhabitants, the house itself proclaimed a poverty that bordered on destitution. And that was the truth.

The twelve noblemen belonged to the number of men who had been defeated April 6, 1538, in the battle of Salinas.[1] The victor had confiscated their goods but they were allowed to breathe the air of Lima, where they survived due to the kindnesses of certain friends. The victor, as was the practice in those days, could have had them hanged without any problem; but Don Francisco Pizarro was ahead of his time, and seemed much more like a man from our age, in which an enemy isn’t always killed or imprisoned, but is deprived either wholly or partially of his ration of bread. Crestfallen yet lifted up, filled up yet starving, that was the Colony, and it has been and is the Republic. As the verse goes:

We leave Guate-mala (mala = bad)

And enter Guate-peor; (peor = worse)

The tambourine changes hands

But not the music.

Or as they say in Italy: Break free of the barbarians only to fall into the hands of the Barbarini.[2]

The names of these twelve knights were Pedro de San Millán, Cristóbal de Sotelo, García de Alvarado, Francisco de Chávez, Martín de Bilbao, Diego Méndez, Juan Rodríguez Barragán, Gómez Pérez, Diego de Hoces, Martín Carrillo, Jerónimo de Almagro and Juan Tello.

Because of the importance of the role they play in this chronicle, we will quickly draw a historical sketch of each of the noblemen, starting with the owner of the house. A tout seigneur, tout honneur.

Pedro de San Millán, Knight of the Order of Santiago, was thirty-eight years old and was among the 170 conquistadors who captured Atahualpa.[3] Upon dividing out the ransom of the Inca, he received 135 weights of silver and 3330 ounces of gold. As a loyal friend of Don Diego de Almagro,[4] he fell in line under Almagro’s standard and fell into disfavor with the Pizarros, who confiscated his fortune, leaving him, as an alm, the dilapidated mansion on Judíos Street. It is said: “A small cage is large enough for a sparrow.” San Millán, when fortune had smiled upon him, had been guilty of ostentatiousness and of excessive spending. He was brave, genteel, and generally popular.

Cristobál de Sotelo was approaching fifty-five years of age, and having served as a soldier in Europe, his opinion was very highly regarded. He was the infantry commander in the battle of Salinas.

García de Alvarado was a dashing young man of twenty-eight, possessing a martial air and an overbearing manner. He was very ambitious and very sure of himself. He also exhibited streaks of roguishness and villainy.

Diego Méndez, of the Order of Santiago, served with the famous general Rodrigo Ordóñez, who died in the battle of Salinas while commanding the losing army. Méndez was forty-three and was better known as a Don Juan and courtier than as a soldier.

The chroniclers tell us little regarding Francisco de Chaves, Martín de Bilbao, Diego de Hoces, Gómez Pérez and Martín Carrillo, only that they were fearless soldiers and beloved of their own men. None of them had reached thirty five years of age.

Juan Tello, the Sevillian, was one of the twelve founders of Lima. The others were Marquis Pizarro, the Treasurer Alonso Riquelme, the Inspector García de Salcedo, the Sevillian Nicolás de Rivera the elder, Ruiz Diáz, Rodrigo Mazuelas, Cristobál Palomino, the Salamancan Nicolás de Rivera the younger, and Picado, the secretary. The first mayors of Lima’s town council were Rivera the elder and Juan Tello. It is obvious that the latter had been an important person, and at the time of our story was forty six years old.

Jerónimo de Almagro was born in the same city as Marshal Almagro. Because of this detail and their last names that were in common, they referred to each other as cousin. Such a relationship did not exist, for Don Diego was an impoverished orphan. Jerónimo was about 40 years old.

It is common knowledge that just as in our day nobody who considers himself to be anybody will be seen in the street in shirtsleeves, likewise, in days past, nobody who was aspiring to be held as a decent man would dare show his face publicly without a cape. Whether it was hot or cold, on a walk, at a banquet or in a church ceremony, the Spaniard and his cape formed an inseparable partnership. Because of this, I suspect that the decree issued in 1822 by Minister Monteagudo[5] prohibiting the Spaniards the use of the cape was as important for Peru’s independence as winning any battle. With its cape outlawed, Spain disappeared.

To compound the misery of our twelve noblemen, between them there was only one cape. And when one of them was compelled to leave, the eleven who remained were unable to set foot outside the mansion because they lacked the indispensable garment.

Antonio Picado, Marquis Don Francisco Pizarro’s secretary, or stated more aptly, his demon of perdition, referred one day to the noblemen as the “Knights of the Cape.” The nickname became famous and before long was on everyone’s lips.

This is a convenient spot for a brief biographical note about Picado.

He came to Peru in 1534 as secretary to Marshal Don Pedro de Alvarado, he of the famous leap in Mexico.[6] Alvarado claimed that certain territories in the North were not included in the territories conceded by the Emperor to Pizarro as part of the conquest and just as he was about to take up arms against Don Diego de Almagro’s forces, Picado sold Alvarado’s secrets to Almagro. One night, suspecting that this infamy would soon be discovered, Picado fled to the enemy camp. Alvarado sent forces in his pursuit, but after failing to overtake him, wrote Don Diego saying that he would not enter into any treaty unless they first sent back the traitor. The gallant Almagro rejected the proposal, thus saving the life of a man who later proved to be traitorous to him and his men.

Don Francisco Pizarro made Picado his secretary, and in this office he exercised a fatal, decisive influence over the Marquis. It was Picado who, stifling the governor’s generous impulses, made him hostile towards those whose only crime had been losing the battle of Salinas.

By 1541 it was known that the monarch, informed of what was happening in these kingdoms, was sending the lawyer Don Cristóbal Vaca de Castro[7] to impeach the governor; and the followers of Almagro, preparing to demand justice for the death of Don Diego, sent captains Alonso Portocarrero and Juan Balsa to receive the man commissioned by the crown and give him reports to bias his opinion. But the investigating judge did not arrive when expected. Sickness and maritime setbacks delayed his arrival at the City of Kings.[8]

Pizarro, meanwhile, decided to win friends, even those of the Knights of the Cape. He sent messages to Sotelo, Chaves, and others, offering to help them out of their indigent situation. But to the credit of the followers of Almagro, they did not stoop to receive the crust of bread being cast to them.

With things in this state, Picado’s insolence increased by the day, and he did not miss any opportunity to insult “the Chileans,” as Almagro’s supporters were called. Angered one night, these followers hung three ropes from the gallows with signs stating: “For Pizarro,” “For Picado,” and “For Velázquez.”[9]

When Pizarro learned of this irreverent act, he was far from being upset, and said while smiling: “Poor wretches! We need to allow them some way to vent their frustrations. They are in such a bind that we need bother them no longer. They are allowing their frustrations to surface.”

But Picado felt, as his name implies, pricked,[10] and that afternoon, June 5, put on a small French cape embroidered with silver amulets, mounted a magnificent horse, and rode back and forth in front of the house of Juan de Rada, the guardian of the youthful Almagro, and the mansion of Pedro de San Millán, the home of our twelve knights. He carried his provocation to the point that, when some of them looked on, he flaunted an insulting gesture, by saying, “For the Chileans,” as he applied his spurs to the animal.

The Knights of the Cape immediately sent for Juan de Rada.

Pizarro had offered to be the second father of the young Almagro, who was orphaned at age nineteen, and as a result accommodated him in the place, but it nettled the young man to hear words discrediting the memory of his father and his friends so he left the Marquis to come under the tutelage of Juan de Rada. The latter was a very spirited and respected old man who belonged to a noble family from Castile, and he was esteemed as a man of great prudence and experience. He lived in some rooms on the street off the Arcade of Botoneros that is known today as “Callejón de los Clerigos”. Rada saw in the youthful Almagro a son and a rallying standard to avenge the Marshal’s death. And all the Chileans, whose number exceeded 200, while recognizing young Don Diego as their leader, looked to Rada for the call to arms and to organize the revolutionary efforts.

Rada quickly responded to the summons of the knights. The old man arrived seething with indignation because of Picado’s most recent offense, and the council resolved not to wait for the justice the crown was sending through this representative, but to take upon themselves the punishment of the Marquis and his insolent secretary.

García de Alvarado, who was wearing the company’s cape that afternoon, threw it to the ground and, standing on it, said: “Let us swear by the salvation of our souls to die in the defense of the rights of young Almagro, and to cut from this cape the death shroud for Antonio Picado!”

OF THE DARING EXPLOIT CARRIED OUT BY THE KNIGHTS OF THE CAPE

The matter could not be carried out so secretly that Pizarro did not find out that the Chileans were holding frequent clandestine meetings, that a restless excitement reigned among them, that they were buying arms, and that when Rada and the young Almagro went out into the street they were followed at a distance by a group of supporters under the guise of escorts. Nevertheless, he did not take any measures to defend himself.

During this time of inaction Pizarro received letters from several dignitaries telling him that the Chileans were openly preparing an uprising throughout the country. These, and other reports, forced him one morning to send for Juan de Rada.

Rada found Pizarro in the palace garden, at the foot of a fig tree which is still in existence, and according to Herrera’s Decadas,[11] the following dialogue ensued:

“What is this all about, Juan de Rada, that it is said that you are buying guns with which to kill me?”

“It is true, sire, that I have purchased two breastplates and a coat of mail to defend myself.”

“And what has made you feel the need to thus equip yourself at this time?”

“We are told, sir, and it is no secret, that your lordship is gathering lances to kill all of us. Let your lordship put an end to us now and do with us what he pleases, because if one starts with the head there is no reason to respect the feet. It is also said that your lordship intends to kill the judge sent by the king. If this is your disposition and you are determined to administer death to the Chileans, stop short of killing them all. Send Don Diego off in a ship, for he is innocent, and I will go with him wherever fortune may carry us.”

“Who has led you to believe such great evil and treason as this? I have never thought of any such thing, and am more anxious than you are for the judge to arrive. He would be here now had he come on the galleon I sent for him to Panama. Regarding the arms, be it known that the other day I went hunting, and among our company there was not a single lance; I ordered my servants to buy one and they bought four. I hope to God, Juan de Rada, that the judge will come and these matters will be put to rest, and may God assist the right.”

It has been rightly said that “good advice comes from the enemy.” Perhaps Pizarro would have avoided his unhappy end if, as the astute Rada had indicated, he would have banished Almagro at the moment.

The discussion continued in a friendly tone, and when Rada bid him farewell, Pizarro gave him six figs that he cut from the tree, among the first grown in Lima.

After this interview Don Francisco thought he had averted all danger, and he continued to ignore the warnings he constantly received.

On the afternoon of June 25, a clergyman secretly told Pizarro that he had become aware that the followers of Almagro were going to attempt to assassinate him, and very soon.

“That priest wants to be a bishop,” replied the Marquis, and with usual confidence, went unescorted on a walk and then bowling with the elder Nicolás de Rivera.

When he retired to bed, the little page who aided him with his clothes told him: “Marquis, sire, all that is being said in the streets is that the Chileans are seeking to kill your lordship.”

“Bah! Leave that nonsense alone, youngster, that kind of thing isn’t for you,” Pizarro said, interrupting him.

With the dawning of Sunday, June 26, the Marquis arose somewhat troubled.

At nine o’clock he called the mayor, Juan de Velázquez, and recommended that he stay informed as to the plans of the Chileans, and if he sensed anything unusual to imprison them without delay. Velázquez gave him the following answer, which is made humorous by the ensuing events:

“Fear not, your lordship, for as long as I hold this staff in my hand, I swear to God no harm will befall you!”

Departing from his usual custom, Pizarro did not go out to mass, and ordered it said in the palace chapel.

Apparently Velázquez did not show prudence, as he should have, regarding the Marquis’ order, and talked it over with the treasurer, Alonso Riquelme, and others. Thus the news reached Pedro San Millán, who went to Rada’s house where a group of the conspirators were gathered. He shared with them what he knew and added: “The time has come to act. If we leave this for tomorrow we will be massacred this very day.”

While the others were scattering throughout the city to carry out different assignments, Juan de Rada, Martín de Bilbao, Diego Méndez, Gómez Pérez, Arbolancha, Narváez and others, nineteen conspirators in all, hastily left the Callejón de los Clerigos (and not from Petateros Street, as is commonly believed) for the palace. Gómez Pérez went around a puddle of water to avoid stepping into it, and Juan de Rada chastised him saying: “We shall be swimming in human blood, and you are taking precautions to keep your feet dry? Turn around and go back--you aren’t meant for this business.”

More than 500 persons who were passing by or were going to noon mass were in the square at that time, and indifferently looked at the group. Some of the suspicious ventured to say: “Those men are going to kill the Marquis or Picado.”

The Marquis, governor, and captain general of Peru, Don Francisco Pizarro, was in one of the rooms of the palace chatting with the bishop elect of Quito, Mayor Velázquez and some fifteen other friends, when a page burst in, shouting “The Chileans are coming to kill my lord the Marquis!”

The ensuing confusion was astonishing. Some rushed through the halls out to the garden, others lowered themselves out the windows to the street. Among the latter was Velázquez, who, to get a better grip on the balustrade, placed his staff between his teeth. Thus he did not break the oath he had made three hours earlier, for if the Marquis found himself in trouble, it was because Velazquez did not have his staff in his hand, but in his mouth.

Pizarro, with his armor poorly adjusted, for he didn’t have time to finish dressing, his cape folded around his arm as a shield, and sword in hand, went out to meet the conspirators, who had already killed a captain and wounded three or four servants. Accompanying the Marquis were his half-brother on his mother’s side, Martín de Alcántara, Juan Ortiz de Zárate, and two pages.

In spite of his sixty-four years, the Marquis fought with youthful vigor, and the conspirators could not get past the threshold of a door defended by Pizarro and his four companions, who resembled him in vigor and courage.

“Traitors! Why do you desire to kill me? Shame! Attacking my house as outlaws!” shouted Pizarro, furious and brandishing his sword. And just as the Marquis struck one of the conspirators pushed forward by Rada, Martín de Bilbao thrust Pizarro through the neck.

The conqueror of Peru pronounced but one word, “Jesus!”, and fell to the floor. He drew a cross in the blood on the ground with his finger, then kissed it.

Juan Rodríguez Barragán then broke a clay pot from Guadalajara over his head, and Don Francisco Pizarro took his last breath.

Martín de Alcántara and the two pages died with him, and Ortiz de Zárate was gravely wounded.

Later on they wanted to drag Pizarro’s body through the square but the pleadings of the bishop of Quito and Juan de Rada’s authority prevented this act of barbaric savageness. That night two of the Marquis’ humble servants washed his body, dressed him in the habit of Santiago without the golden spurs, which had disappeared, opened a tomb on the grounds on which the cathedral stands today, in the patio still known as Naranjos, and buried the body. Pizarro’s bones are now enclosed in a gold-clasped velvet coffin under the high altar of the cathedral. At least that is the general belief.

Once the assassination had been carried out, the authors of the same went out to the square shouting, “Long live the king! The tyrant is dead! Long live Almagro! May justice reign in the land!” And Juan de Rada rubbed his hands together in satisfaction, saying, “Happy is this day on which it shall be known that the Marshall had friends loyal enough to avenge his murder.”

Jerónimo de Aliaga, Illán Suárez de Carbajal the Factor, Nicolás de Rivera the Elder, the council mayor, and many of the other prominent citizens of Lima were immediately taken prisoner. The homes of the Marquis, his brother Martín de Alcántara, and Picado were looted. The value of the booty of the first was estimated at 100,000 pesos; the second, 15,000; and the last, 40,000.

By three in the afternoon more than two hundred Almagrists had created a new town council; had installed Almagro the Younger in the palace with the title of governor, until the king should make other arrangements; had recognized Cristóbal de Sotelo as Lieutenant Governor and had made Juan de Rada commander of the army.

The monks of the Order of La Merced, who were Almagrists in both Lima and Cuzco, bore the monstrance in a procession and hastened to recognize the new government. The friars always played an important part in the quarrels between conquerors. There were those who turned the pulpit into a rostrum for slander against any group not to their liking. And as proof of the influence sermons had over troops, we will copy a letter from Francisco Girón[12] to Father Baltasar Melgarejo in 1553. It reads as follows:

“Very Excellent and Reverend Sir:

“I have learned that your Reverence is waging more of a war against me than the soldiers with their arms. I should be pleased to learn of a change in the matter, because otherwise, God granting me victory, I shall be forced by your Reverence to overlook our friendship and the position your Reverence holds. May your most excellent and Reverend person be preserved.

“From my army tent in Pachacamac, your servant kisses your Reverence’s hand.

“Francisco Hernández Girón.”

A historical observation in passing. Rada was always the soul of the conspiracy and young Almagro was unaware of his followers’ plans. He was not consulted on the matter of the assassination of Pizarro, and the youthful leader had no more involvement in it than to accept the completed fact.

After Mayor Velázquez had been imprisoned, his brother, the Bishop of Cuzco, Friar Vicente Valverde, the fanatic of the Dominican Order who had such an important role in the capture, torture and execution of Atahualpa, found the way for him to escape. The two brothers then left to go join with Vaca de Castro, but on the island of Puna the Indians killed them as well as sixteen other Spaniards with their arrows. We are not certain whether the Church reveres Father Valverde as one of its martyrs.

Velázquez jumped from the frying pan into the fire. The Knights of the Cape would not have pardoned him anyway.

From the very first signs of the revolution Antonio Picado hid in the house of Riquelme the treasurer, and when his hiding place was discovered the next day they went to take him captive. Riquelme told the Almagrists: “I don’t know where Picado is,” while making clear with his eyes for them to look under the bed. The pen refuses to comment on such an act of treason.

The Knights of the Cape, presided over by Juan de Rada and with the consent of Don Diego, formed a court of justice. Each reproached Picado with the injury he had received when Picado had been so powerful with Pizarro. They then tortured him so he would tell where the Marquis had placed hidden treasures. Finally, on September 29, they cut off his head in the main square with the following proclamation voiced in Spanish by Cosme Ledesma, a black man who spoke Spanish, accompanied by drums and four soldiers carrying his lances and two others holding harquebuses with the fuses lit: “His Majesty commands that this man die for being a trouble-maker in these kingdoms, and because he wrongfully seized and burned many royal orders, concealing the same due to the damage it constituted to the Marquis, and because he was extorting and had extorted a great sum of gold from the land.”

The oath of the Knights of the Cape ran true to the letter. The famous cape became Antonio Picado’s death shroud.

III
THE DEMISE OF ALMAGRO THE YOUNGER AND THE TWELVE KNIGHTS

We do not pretend to go into detail concerning the fourteen and a half months young Almagro was in power, nor to give the history of the campaign which Vaca de Castro had to undertake to overthrow him. We shall only speak of the events without dwelling on the details.

With only a few sympathizers in Lima’s environs, Don Diego was forced to flee the city to gather strength in Guamanga and Cuzco, where he had numerous supporters. A few days before his retreat, Francisco de Chaves came to him with a complaint. When he received no redress he said, “I desire to be your friend no longer, and I now return to you my sword and my horse.” Juan de Rada arrested him for insubordination and had him beheaded. Thus one of the Knights of the Cape met his end.

Juan de Rada, stricken by age and fatigue, died in Jauja at the beginning of the campaign. This was a fatal blow to the revolutionary cause. García de Alvarado replaced him as general, and Cristóbal de Sotelo was named Field Marshal.

Before long discord broke out between the two army leaders, and while Sotelo was lying sick in bed, García de Alvarado went to him seeking an explanation for certain gossip which had reached his ears. “I do not recall saying anything about you or any member of the Alvarado family,” the Field Marshal answered. “But if I did say something, I’ll say it again; because, being who I am, I couldn’t care less about the Alvarados. And just wait until this fever subsides and you can demand an explanation with the point of your sword.” At that point the impetuous García de Alvarado committed the vile deed of wounding him and one of his followers finished him off. Thus, the death of the second Knight of the Cape.

Young Almagro would have liked to punish the treacherous killer in the act, but that undertaking wasn’t feasible. García de Alvarado, now haughty because of his prestige in military matters, conspired to do away with Don Diego, and then, depending on which suited his interests, either fight Vaca de Castro or reach an agreement with him. Almagro, giving the impression that all was well between them, inspired the confidence of Alvarado, and found the way to lure him to a feast Pedro de San Millán was giving in Cuzco. There, while the party was in full sway, a confidant of Don Diego threw himself upon Don García while saying:

“You are under arrest!”

“Not under arrest, but dead,” added Almagro, delivering a thrust of his sword. The other guests finished him off.

Thus three of the Knights of the Cape disappeared before even facing the enemy in the battle. The handwriting was on the wall that they would all die a violent death, bathed in their own blood.

In the meantime, the crucial moment was drawing near, and Vaca de Castro made peace proposals to Almagro and offered general amnesty, from which only the remaining nine Knights of the Cape, along with two or three other Spaniards, would be accepted.

The civil war ended on Sunday, September 16, 1542, with the bloody battle at Chupas. Almagro, leading 500 men, was almost the conqueror of the 800 following Vaca de Castro’s standard. During the first hour the victory seemed to be all but certain for the young leader; Diego de Hoces, who was commanding one wing of the army, thoroughly routed an opposing division. Without the daring of Francisco de Carbajal, who reestablished order in Vaca de Castro’s battle lines, and more importantly, without the inexperience or treachery of Pedro de Candia, who commanded the Almagrist artillery, the Chileans’ triumph would have been certain.

The number of dead on both sides exceeded two hundred and forty, and that of the wounded was also considerable. With such a small number of soldiers it is only possible to explain such butchery by remembering that the Almagrists held the same enthusiastic fanaticism for their leader that they had professed for his father, the Marshal. And it is no secret that fanaticism for a cause has always produced heroes and martyrs.

Those certainly were times in which entering into battle required a stout heart. The conflicts ended in hand-to-hand combat, and strength, skill and courage were the factors governing success.

Firearms were about three centuries away from guns with firing pins, and were a hindrance for a soldier, who was unable to use a musket or harquebus if he wasn’t equipped with flint, steel and tinder to light the fuse. Artillery was in the diaper stage, for if the stone-throwing mortars or falconets, were good for anything, it was to make noise like bombs. And while we are on the subject, gunpowder was wasted in salvos, for as the gunners were not skilled in range-finding, the balls would scatter wherever the devil guided them. Nowadays it is a pleasure for both the cowardly and the bold to die on the field of battle, for they are felled with the cleanliness with which a complex equation is solved. One dies mathematically, according to the rules, without an error in addition or in writing. And that ought to be comforting for any soul being taken to the other side. Without a doubt, nowadays a cannonball is a scientific matter, for it is born well educated, knowing exactly where it is to go. This is real progress, and to deny it is nonsense.

When all hopes of victory had vanished, Martín de Bilbao and Jerónimo de Almagro refused to flee the battlefield, so they rushed out among their enemies shouting, “Here I am! I killed the Marquis!” In a few moments they fell lifeless. Their bodies were sliced up the following day.

Pedro de San Millán, Martín Carrillo and Juan Tello were taken captive, and Vaca de Castro immediately ordered that they be beheaded.

Diego de Hoces, the fierce captain who caused such great destruction to come upon the loyalist troops, was able to flee the battlefield, but was beheaded a few days later in Guamanga.

Juan Rodríguez Barragán, who had been made lieutenant governor of Cuzco, was taken prisoner in the city and executed. When the same authorities that Don Diego had appointed learned of his defeat, they declared their support for the conqueror hoping for pardons and favors.

Diego Méndez and Gómez Pérez were able to take refuge with the Inca Manco, who in a protest against the conquest maintained a good-sized Indian army in the peaks of the Andes. They lived there until the end of 1544. One day after having an altercation with the Inca Manco, Gómez Pérez killed him by stabbing him, and in turn the Indians killed the two knights and four other Spaniards who had taken refuge with them.

Young Almagro fought desperately until the last moment, when, with the outcome of the battle decided, he spurred his horse to gallop towards Pedro de Candia, and while shouting at him “Traitor!”, ran him through with his lance. Diego de Méndez then forced him to take flight with him in order to take refuge with the Inca. And they would have been successful had it not occurred to Méndez to go into Cuzco to bid his mistress farewell. Because of this act of folly Almagro was taken prisoner, and while Méndez did manage to escape, he later died at the hands of the Indians.

A trial was held, and Don Diego was found guilty. He appealed the judgment to the court at Panama and to the king, but in vain, for the appeal was denied. He then said with integrity: “I summon Vaca de Castro to appear before the judgment seat of God, where we will be tried without bias. And since I will now die where my father was beheaded, my only request is that I be placed in the same grave, underneath his corpse.”

He met death, says a chronicler who witnessed the execution, with courage. He refused to have his eyes covered so he could fix them, up until the last moment, on the image of the Christ crucified. And as he had requested, he was placed in the same tomb in which his father the Marshal had been interred.

This young man was twenty-four years old, born to a noble Indian woman from Panama. He was of medium height and winning countenance, a fine cavalryman, very courageous and skilled in the use of arms. He inherited the shrewdness of his father, and was even more generous, although his father was a very giving person, and like him, he knew how to command the utmost allegiance of his followers.

Thus, with the sad end of their leader and of the Knights of the Cape, the band of Chileans ceased to exist.

CHAPTER 2
DON ALONSO THE BRAWNY ONE

The story is told about the Venezuelan General Páez,[13] the hero of the plains, who during the epoch of war to the death with the mother country,[14] took a fat Spanish soldier prisoner, a man who had a reputation of possessing Herculean strength, and said to him, “Listen, you terrible excuse for a horseman. I will spare your life if you are able to throw me to the ground.”

The prisoner smiled and accepted the challenge, sure that victory was certain, but Páez, who as a wrestler was more clever and more agile than he was strong, was able to put the Spaniard down in two minutes. Then the winner said, “Now, you trembling nincompoop, prepare yourself to be shot.”

Whereupon the soldier said, “Agreed, my general. You have played me the same way that a cat plays with a mouse. Now, swallow me up.”

We can guess that the reply found favor with Páez because he pardoned the prisoner.

In the Royal Army there was also a very strong man, Commander Santalla, of whom it was said that he would take a small book of forty pages, that is a deck of cards, and tear it in two, saying, “This a lot of people do.” He then would do the same with the resulting eighty pieces, saying, “This, very few can do.” Then he would take the 160 pieces and tear them in two, exclaiming triumphantly, “This only one person can do, and he is Commander Santalla!”

But in the matter of powerful men, Páez, Santalla and all the modern Samsons are babes in arms compared with Don Alonso, a person of whom one chronicler said that when his horse got tired he would hoist it onto his shoulders without removing the harnesses or the gear and would continue on his way as if he were doing nothing worthy of comment.

Don Alonso el Membrudo[15] is the nickname the conquistadors gave to Captain Alonso Díaz, a relative of the Governor of Panama, Don Pedro Arias Dávila.

An inhabitant of Cuzco when the rebellion broke out, which in the early stages favored Almagro the Younger,[16] he was very devoted to Marquis Pizarro and refused to abandon the city, hiding there and conspiring to aid the efforts of the lawyer Vaca de Castro, who had been sent to Peru to put an end to the turmoil.

Upon receiving notice that 800 Royalist soldiers had departed from Guamanga in order to do battle with 600 of Almagro’s troops, Don Alonso decided to abandon his hiding place and make his way to Chupas, anxious to arrive in time to take part in the battle which took place on September 16, 1542.

He was still several leagues from Vaca de Castro’s encampment when he saw coming toward him three horsemen on spirited horses at full gallop, who were carrying to Cuzco news of the disaster suffered by the armed forces of Almagro the Younger.

Alonso Díaz stopped one of the emissaries, and the latter, upon recognizing one of the original conquistadors to come to Peru with Pizarro, dismounted, exclaiming, “Good news, Captain! Long live the king! The tyrant has been defeated!”

So great was Don Alonso’s satisfaction upon hearing the welcome news that he embraced the soldier, saying, “Long live the king! Give me a real embrace!”

And so powerful was that embrace that the soldier let out a cry and fell down, blood spurting from his mouth.

Alonso Díaz, who in the battles of the conquest killed not with his sword but by applying a bear hug to his Indian adversaries, forgot in the enthusiasm of his glee that his arms were lethal weapons when they embraced—causing death in friend or foe.

Having been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, he was pardoned by Vaca de Castro, but he was forbidden to embrace anyone, under pain of death—man or woman, friend or foe.

In the article that Manuel de Mendiburu wrote about Alonso Díaz in his Diccionario histórico del Perú he states that a royal order came from Spain taking from the braggart the right to embrace. I assume that this royal order was the approbation of the sentence decreed by Vaca de Castro.

That skill is worth more than strength is proved by the sword duel between Alonso Díaz and Francisco de Villacastín. The latter was one of the companions of Francisco Pizarro, who considered him such a loyal supporter and good friend that he made him one of the first governors of Cuzco, giving him for his wife Doña Leonor, a ñusta,[17] daughter of Huayna Capac.[18] By virtue of this marriage Villacastín came to be the lord of Ayaviri, an encomienda[19] which boasted 8,000 Indians who paid tribute.

Villacastín, because of his ugliness, was a grotesque person in appearance. He was missing two front teeth and the reason for such a defect was indeed something that caused people to laugh. It happened this way. One day, Don Francisco was walking through a jungle in Panama when a monkey that was in the top of a tree threw a rock at him and knocked out four teeth. Villacastín, after having recovered from the blow, cocked his crossbow and killed the creature that had disfigured him for life. How fortunate we are to live in a time when we have not only false individual teeth but also false sets of teeth. If I’m not mistaken, Garcilaso,[20] who knew him well, tells about the monkey that threw the rock.

Alonso Díaz, who was a great joker, made fun of Villacastín one day, saying to him, “You only have the courage to challenge a swaggering monkey, and then come out toothless for the eternities.”

This stung Villacastín, whereupon he unsheathed his sword. Alonso Díaz put himself on guard and the two of them began to fight. But Don Francisco, who although not as strong nor as vigorous as his adversary, was superior to him in agility and after a few moments of dueling dealt him such a vicious blow that for a period of eight days it was uncertain whether Don Alonso would recover from his wound.

Having fought with Girón in his rebellion,[21] in which this rebel chief was defeated and executed, Díaz took advantage of the pardon extended by the Royal Audience[22] and returned to Cuzco to live out his last days peacefully in Cuzco, where he was one of the wealthiest inhabitants. But in 1556, suspecting that Díaz would take part in new uprisings, the Viceroy, the Marquis de Cañete, had him garroted in secret.[23]

One day, someone who was curious about the death of Alonso Díaz asked the Viceroy why he had executed such an outstanding Spaniard. The Viceroy replied, “I did it to cure that crazy person of the bad habit he had of embracing people. In spite of the fact that he knew his caresses were dangerous and forbidden, one night in a dance he defied the royal order and embraced one of his female acquaintances according to the testimony of ten of the most notable inhabitants of Cuzco.”

Whatever may be the truth in the case, I don’t know which is the right version and I am not in the mood to write more on the subject. Embracer or revolutionary, the fact is that Don Alonso el Membrudo died an ignoble death.

Magic Caral the most Ancient City in Peru

One of the Peruvian main attractions is just some kilometers away from Lima (Capital of Peru). I am talking about Caral, which is a complex considered the Most Ancient Civilization in America. This City is part of ther 18 settlements in the Supe valley, and cover more or less 65 hectares. If you go there you will be witness of the Great Pyramid, The Amphitheater Pyramid and the Residential Quarters of the Elite.

The head of the Caral project is Dr Ruth Shady, who is in charge of the excavations. She is also head of the Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology at he Cultural Center in Lima's San Marcos University.

Caral will give you the opportunity to go back to the past and admire the way the first peruvians used to trade with the highlands, the rainfores and the northern and southern coast.

Paul Kosok discovered Caral (Chupacigarro Grande) in 1948, but it received little attention until recently because it appeared to lack many typical artifacts that were sought at archeological sites throughout the Andes at the time. Archaeologist Ruth Shady further explored the 5,000 year-old city of pyramids in the Peruvian desert, with its elaborate complex of temples, an amphitheater and ordinary houses[2]. The urban complex is spread out over 150 acres (607,000 m²) and contains plazas and residential buildings. Caral was a thriving metropolis at roughly the same time that Egypt's great pyramids were being built.

The main pyramid (Spanish: Pirámide Mayor) covers an area nearly the size of four football fields and is 60 feet (18 m) tall. Caral is the largest recorded site in the Andean region with dates older than 2000 BCE and appears to be the model for the urban design adopted by Andean civilizations that rose and fell over the span of four millennia. It is believed that Caral may answer questions about the origins of Andean civilizations and the development of the first cities.

Among the artifacts found at Caral are a knotted textile piece that the excavators have labeled a quipu. They argue that the artifact is evidence that the quipu record keeping system, a method involving knots tied in rope that was brought to perfection by the Inca, was older than any archaeologist had previously guessed. However, the artifact is orders of magnitude simpler than later Inca quipu, and it is thus doubtful that it was produced as part of a robust accounting system. Indeed, many archaeologists have actually questioned whether or not it is a recording device at all.

No trace of warfare has been found at Caral; no battlements, no weapons, no mutilated bodies. Shady's findings suggest it was a gentle society, built on commerce and pleasure. In one of the pyramids, they uncovered 32 flutes made of condor and pelican bones and 37 cornets of deer and llama bones. One find revealed the remains of a baby, wrapped and buried with a necklace made of stone beads.

They also found evidence of drug use and possibly aphrodisiacs. One theory suggests that the coca they found may be evidence that Caral sprung up as an organized coca growing and distribution centre.

Caral spawns 19 other pyramid complexes scattered across the 35 square mile (80 km²) area of the Supe Valley. The find of the quipu indicates that the later Inca civilization preserved some cultural continuity from the Caral civilization. The date of 2627 BCE is based on carbon dating reed and woven carrying bags that were found in situ. These bags were used to carry the stones that were used for the construction of the pyramids. The material is an excellent candidate for dating, thus allowing for a high precision. The site may date even earlier as samples from the oldest parts of the excavation have yet to be dated.[3] The town had a population of approximately 3000 people. But there are 19 other sites in the area (posted at Caral), allowing for a possible total population of 20,000 people for the Supe valley. All of these sites in the Supe valley share similarities with Caral. They had small platforms or stone circles. Shady (2001) believes that Caral was the focus of this civilization, which itself was part of an even vaster complex, trading with the coastal communities and the regions further inland – as far as the Amazon, if the depiction of monkeys is any indication.

Prehistoric whale fossil found in Peru

Source Andina. Scientists in Peru have discovered the fossilized skull and jaw of a giant sperm whale, 12 million to 13 million years old, off the coast of Peru, the journal Nature reported.

The fossil belongs to a previously unknown genus of sperm whale and has been named Leviathan melvillei in honor of Herman Melville, author of "Moby Dick".

At more than 40 feet long and with a 10-foot skull, it is the largest fossil sperm whale ever found, researcher Olivier Lambert of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris reported.

Modern sperm whales have relatively small teeth in their lower jaw only, and feed by suction. The fossil specimen had teeth as long as 14 inches in both upper and lower jaws and probably killed its prey in a manner similar to modern killer whales, Lambert said, according to UPI.

The fossil was found in ocean layers were fossils of giant sharks have been found, and the two predators probably preyed on large marine vertebrates like baleen whales, the Nature article said.

INXS to play Lima in September

Lima is one of the cheapes cities for foreign tourists

This study was made at the end of the first quarter and measures the comparative cost of over 200 products and services used in 300 establishments, including housing, transport, food, clothing, entertainment and household goods.

Lima has become cheaper since last year, falling 13 places compared last year’s survey, when ranked 22nd. The capital city reached 115th place in 2008.

According to Mercer, governments and multinational corporations use this information to get an idea of the purchasing power of their employees when transferred abroad.

Machu Picchu, 3 years as one of the new seven wonderss

Tourists arrivals to Peru increased 4.5%

“This result is explained by a recovery of the arrivals to the Jorge Chavez International Airport and to Santa Rosa Airport in Tacna,” he said.

If a positive outlook is maintained, the increase of international tourists arrivals can be as high as 5.1% by the end of the year.

“This means the arrival of two million 249,122 international tourists, which would surpass our previous estimate of 2.2 million, given at the beginning of the year,” he said.

Minister Perez presented today the numbers of inbound tourism, which revealed an increase of 4.1% in the arrival of international tourists to the country regarding the same period last year.

British Ambassador said she hopes there could be more Peruvian restaurants in London as there are only two now, which are not enough for the British demand.

Ambassador Nettleton also stated that Great Britain is the largest sender of tourists to Peru with an estimated 67,000 tourists coming this year, but the number will still grow as the global economy recovers.

“Peru has fantastic amounts of things to offer to tourists all over the world. I hope the number of visitors can grow. Currently, 67,000 tourists come from Britain but the tendency grows. Last year there was a small deep but the tendency is growing every year”, she said.

She said a rapid recovery of tourism is expected this year because Britons are great travelers and Peru is on the spotlight, so there won’t be another fall but an increase.

Nettleton stated that Peru’s tourism top attractions are very well known all over the world, but it is necessary to work on promoting new tourists destinations and packages for special travelers such as birdwatchers.

“A lot of people know about Machu Picchu. But Peru should expand knowledge of other tourist attractions. People from abroad focus on just a few places in Peru, such as Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Puno, Arequipa, but there are many more places,” she said.
